TOMORROW’S CLEANING MAY 10

Don’t be antisocial

TOMORROW’S CLEANING EDITOR, CHARLOTTE TAYLOR, LOOKS AT THE BENEFITS OF SOCIAL NETWORKING AND URGES YOU ALL TO FIND YOUR VOICE ONLINE.

Last week, the phone rang in the office and I just happened to pick it up. It was a key industry professional (I’m not naming names you nosey people!) who was calling up to discuss social media with me, querying its uses.

This wasn’t the first time I have been asked about the benefits of being online.

This issue actually takes me back to my days as a student and trainee journalist. A wise guest lecturer once told a lecture hall of over- optimistic journalism students that he would never read the tons of CVs that landed in his Inbox, begging for a job, and boasting on the behalf of those endless applicants. Instead he would Google each person and, if they weren’t online - whether it be on Twitter, Facebook, or a blog - into the Deleted Items folder they went. And this applies to you too, cleaning industry members, as well as those eager journalism students.

We are online these days. Let’s face it, you wouldn’t be reading this if you weren’t. Whether you adore the internet, see its uses, or just plain put up with it – the future is online. Denying it will only make the transition more difficult.

Think about it this way. If you need something, whether a product, a service, or even just advice or information, you Google it, don’t you? Don’t shake your head or deny it, because I suspect every one of you has used your favourite ‘search engine’ (it would presumptuous of me to assume you all use Google) to find what you need. Never mind that dusty Yellow Pages, in the back of a cupboard somewhere.

If I can’t find a certain company or product online, the likelihood is, I won’t trust it either. Naff websites that are poorly produced put me off completely. I know it sounds like I’m ‘judging a book by its cover’ but think about it,

you spend valuable time and money on your company image for what reason? To give the right impression. The same applies online. If I see a rubbish website, I think of rubbish products and the lack of money to invest in said products. If I see no website at all, you don’t exist.

Tomorrow’s Cleaning is online. Anyone can find us – that is the beauty of it. We use Twitter, we use LinkedIn, we blog, we YouTube (please don’t search for that – you will be watching videos of me all day otherwise!) and, well, let’s face we do pretty much everything we possibly can. Why?

Well, there are a whole host of reasons.

• Why not? It’s free! – The only thing that these services do take up is your time. Yes time is valuable but I think we can all find the time for a useful freebie. Social media is literally free advertising. Now, don’t get
