Is your washroom economical to run?

WASHROOM MANAGERS NEED TO CONSIDER THE RUNNING COSTS AS WELL AS THE INITIAL OUTLAY WHEN EQUIPPING THE WASHROOM OF AN OFFICE, INSTITUTION OR OTHER PUBLIC BUILDING AS SCA TISSUE EUROPE’S PRODUCT AND MARKET MANAGER CHARLOTTE BRANWHITE REPORTS.

Many washroom and facilities managers are tempted to pick the cheapest possible systems when equipping the toilets in their building. But initial outlay is not the only factor to consider when choosing a washroom system.

Cheaper options may lead to a great deal of waste which will force up costs to a much higher level than if the facilities manager had bought more wisely to begin with.

For instance, C-fold hand towels have long been the traditional low-cost choice for large public buildings. However, washroom users tend to take these out of the dispenser in clumps rather than one at a time. If every user takes out two or three more towels than they need, the “economical” option suddenly becomes very expensive.

A good alternative is the Tork hand towel roll system which is designed to give out one sheet of paper at a time. This reduces the problem of over-consumption and waste. Companies that have switched from folded towels to the Tork hand towel roll have reported reductions in consumption of up to 75%.

When seeking a low-cost toilet tissue option in washrooms where space is limited,

managers are tempted to supply

conventional toilet rolls since

these require no dispenser outlay and can be bought from the local cash and carry.

However, the lack of a dispenser means these rolls are at the mercy of vandals and pilferers and will also need frequent replenishing by maintenance staff since they provide relatively low meterage per roll.

A good solution here is the Tork Compact Auto Shift which holds two 100 metre rolls of toilet paper, equivalent to eight conventional toilet rolls. When the first roll has been used up, the second roll automatically shifts down into position ready for use and the empty core is collected inside the dispenser. The janitor then simply drops a new roll into the top of the dispenser during the next maintenance check.

The Tork Compact Auto Shift reduces storage space and transport costs because the hard- wound rolls provide more than double the meterage of conventional rolls. And the fact that the dispenser is lockable means the rolls are protected from vandals. Companies using this system have reduced toilet tissue consumption by up to 68% compared with using alternative toilet paper solutions.

A good option for high traffic washrooms is the Tork jumbo roll, a long-lasting system that avoids the need for frequent maintenance checks. A stub roll function in the dispenser allows the entire Tork jumbo roll to be used up which helps to avoid waste.

There are many other potentially time and money-saving features of a washroom system that may not be immediately obvious to the manager. For example, a cheap soap bar on every sink will quickly become contaminated while also leaving a mess on each basin which will require frequent cleaning.

By installing Tork Premium soap - which comes in a non-drip cartridge that can be replaced in seconds - a great deal of valuable maintenance hours can be saved.

All washroom dispensers should be easy to clean and quick to refill. They should also be situated at the correct height since if they are too high on the wall, washroom visitors will have to reach up to access paper and may pull out more than they need.

Products should be packed using the minimum of packaging to reduce the time and labour costs spent taking boxes to the skip.

An economical washroom is therefore not necessarily one that is cheap to equip – it is one where cost-in-use, consumption and maintenance have all been considered. This is why effective products in good dispensing systems can make all the difference.
