Oh dear, the same old PR campaigns with very little change to the original one I organised for the paper industry trade association’s hand towel group with the University of Westminster in 1993 and refined in 1998. Is it not possible for the PR companies today to think of new initiatives that will promote their products – paper towels or warm air blowers – in a favourable light/or knocking the opposition, without repeating the old process? After 25 years working for Kimberly-Clark, Kruger and Metsa Tissue as their PR consultancy, and from April not working for any paper company, I think I can stand back and make reasonably well informed and honest factual comment.

As the debate continues on hand dryers vs. paper towels, there seems to be an increasing resistance in the market place to really look into what’s best for you or your client.

The choice dryer on every body’s lips is the Dyson Airblade, renowned for it low energy use and quick drying time, and let’s be fair, Dyson have advertised well.

If we look back just 10 years ago, we where all still wiping our hands on the back of our jeans. Hand dryers just took to long to dry your hands! Things have moved on, there are now a number of new generation ‘hands in’ dryers available on the market which will dry you hands relatively quickly and use less energy to do so.

These new models actually collect the water from you hands therefore reducing slips in the washroom and more importantly making the life of the cleaner easier. They even look great; the Veltia hand dryer for example is made from 60% recycled materials and comes in any colour you want! Mitsubishi also have a very low energy machine. www.greenplanetsolutions.co.uk

There is so much ill-informed and biased rubbish printed on this now rather boring topic. The truth about paper towels and warm air (excluding cost in use) are as follows:

www.vezeyconsultants.com

Speed of drying Paper and Towels are the fastest, but the gap is closing after recent innovation in Jet dryers

Environmental impact Paper generates waste with every dry, but recycled and / or sustainably sourced paper can minimise this impact

Towels are recycled (washed) and require no power supply

New jet dryers boast low energy consumption

Hygienic With paper and retractable towels a new piece is available every time, and with antibacterial cotton towels the risk of cross contamination is minimised

Compact size There is a trend of Washrooms getting smaller

Expense Choice of purchase outlay or ongoing service or consumable costs

Tidy There is a trend of lower frequency maintenance: is the bin big enough for the paper waste, will the towel cabinet be well maintained?

Initial

The debate between the paper suppliers and hand air dryer manufacturers has raged for years, each claiming to be more environmentally friendly, cost effective and hygienic, than the other. The truth is all of the options (Paper, serviced towels, warm air and jet air dryers) have their strengths and weaknesses. So at Initial we advise you consider a number of factors in your decision: Page 1  |  Page 2  |  Page 3  |  Page 4  |  Page 5  |  Page 6  |  Page 7  |  Page 8  |  Page 9  |  Page 10  |  Page 11  |  Page 12  |  Page 13  |  Page 14  |  Page 15  |  Page 16  |  Page 17  |  Page 18  |  Page 19  |  Page 20  |  Page 21  |  Page 22  |  Page 23  |  Page 24  |  Page 25  |  Page 26  |  Page 27  |  Page 28  |  Page 29  |  Page 30  |  Page 31  |  Page 32  |  Page 33  |  Page 34  |  Page 35  |  Page 36  |  Page 37  |  Page 38  |  Page 39  |  Page 40  |  Page 41  |  Page 42  |  Page 43  |  Page 44  |  Page 45  |  Page 46  |  Page 47  |  Page 48  |  Page 49  |  Page 50  |  Page 51  |  Page 52  |  Page 53  |  Page 54  |  Page 55  |  Page 56  |  Page 57  |  Page 58  |  Page 59  |  Page 60  |  Page 61  |  Page 62  |  Page 63  |  Page 64  |  Page 65  |  Page 66  |  Page 67  |  Page 68  |  Page 69  |  Page 70
