me wrong, you still need to place ads elsewhere to reach your direct marketplace but using outlets such as blogs and Twitter is a great way to meet potential clients and to spread your knowledge around the industry.

• Networking – As the old saying goes: “It’s good to talk.” Talking to your existing and potential customers is more than just courteous. It is an eye-opener. After all, knowing what your customer wants is like gold-dust. When a rare opportunity presents itself, don’t waste it. No one would pick a stranger over an old friend.

• Awareness – Social networking gradually builds awareness based on experience and knowledge of products. Think about it this way, you always believe the reviews over the endless marketing spiel don’t you? This works in the same way – spread the good news, rather than stuff it down people’s throats.

• Resources – Sites such as Twitter and LinkedIn can be a great way to learn about your industry. With plenty of groups to join

and people to follow, you will never be stuck for the latest news and information. Maybe someone could help you solve a problem, find a new supplier, advise you about a client, offer you a new job etc. Better yet, what a great way to keep on top of your closest competitor...

• Referrals – If people don’t know you, how can they recommend you or your products and services? Think! The hint is in the words “social” and “networking.” Like a tree, the more you spread out, the more branches you will have, and the further you will reach.
