A fi rst in policy control
Exponential-e is aiming to change the world with its revolutionary approach to application policy control. The company claims to be the first telco in Europe to give customers the ability to directly manage and control the performance of their network applications via a self-service portal.

will also help businesses comply with new legislation to prevent the downloading and sharing of illegal content. The Digital Economy Bill, just passed into law, includes measures to disconnect illegal file sharers from the web and the power for copyright holders to block access to websites hosting illegal content. According to Exponential-e, most IT managers have no idea about the type of applications on their corporate Internet. However, this business Internet solution allows customers to control the web- based applications it is being used to support. Exponential-e’s Managing Director, Lee Wade, commented: “A3
can see exactly what Internet traffic they have and lets them get rid of the rogue stuff while guaranteeing the performance of the good bits. A3
should be
considered as the antidote to the Digital Economy Bill.”

xponential-e’s new service doesn’t require any tin at the edge of the network. The solution sits in the network itself, making it less expensive and easier to deploy than a hardware-based service. “Organisations can now buy a solution embedded into the network product, with no CPE, giving them the ability to identify and manage the performance of the applications running across their network,” said Adrian Hobbins, CTO. “Delivered as a managed service, the solution will help businesses cost-effectively align their network resources more

closely to their specific needs, and guarantee the performance and availability of critical applications.”
The new service has been called A3
, a name that illustrates its three key ‘Application’, ‘Awareness’ and ‘Assurance’ features. Exponential- e is offering its new service as a next generation evolution of its corporate networking and business Internet solutions (PowerServe Internet and PowerNGN). The solution offers organisations direct insight into the type and mix of application traffic running across their networks without a need to invest in,
Hobbins highlighted that granular visibility into the network need no longer be the preserve of large enterprise, and he believes the channel is ideally placed to blaze a trail in bringing application policy control to the mass market. “It is now possible to offer service levels against certain applications. That’s a massive advantage for customers wanting to take advantage of SaaS delivery over the Internet,” said Hobbins. “The channel will have the option of passing the new functionality directly to the end user. However, they may decide to retain access to the portal and benefit from additional recurring revenues by offering the application awareness as a managed service.”
With more and more applications playing an integral role to the success of an organisation, a finer level of filtering, reporting and management is now

an imperative, and Hobbins believes that A3
addresses this
complexity in today’s networks. He commented: “Customers can generate their own inventories of the business applications traversing their network together with their performance and behavioural information. They can measure the volume of traffic being generated as a result of each application and can set up usage thresholds which alert when the threshold is exceeded.”
While Exponential-e’s product portfolio already provides for multiple levels of QoS, A3

Application Performance Management capability gives customers the granularity and visibility to guarantee the performance and availability of critical applications. Hobbins added: “Applied to the Internet, A3 delivers much needed control and enables businesses to manage the performance of each application as a distinct service. With SaaS going mainstream, the ability to fine tune the performance of an individual application is invaluable.”
Delivered from Exponential-e’s cloud, customers avoid the cost and inconvenience of deploying and maintaining often costly hardware-based solutions, and have the flexibility of turning the service on and off as they choose. Hobbins reckons the A3
technology
is revolutionary. He commented: “Customers do not need to buy any dedicated network device, nor do they need to reconfigure their network. PowerNGN with A3 comes with a self-service portal making it simple to use. Just plug the Internet into the LAN as normal and the capability is already there. All for a simple monthly fee.”
A3
will be available directly to Exponential-e’s business customers as well as via select channel partners. Exponential-e has launched the new solution with its partner Alcatel-Lucent.
