Forecast predicts heavy weather ahead

THE HEWES NOVEMBER 2009

Construction Regional Forecasts of output for new work has found that workloads are expected to fall again in 2010 by six per cent – but that stability is forecast for 2011, when the value of work is expected to settle at £100bn. The Hewes Regional Construction

Forecasts for November 2009 are based on those contained in GB Construction Outlook forecasts (October 2009). The forecast also claims that both new work and repair and maintenance will decline sharply and the volume of public output is forecast to fall by 14 per cent over the years 2009-2011 (and private work by 25 per cent). Martin Hewes, of Hewes & Associates, commented: ‘Industry

workloads will remain way below their peak for some time to come. Adapting to that market is the key challenge facing industry operators.’

THE ECA IS CALLING UPON THE

electrical sector to take the lead when advising on installing energy- saving technology. To find out where consumers stand on the issue, the ECA recently undertook a survey (conducted by YouGov). The findings highlighted that 44 per cent of adults who don’t have energy-saving equipment in their homes believe they cannot afford the initial costs of installing green technologies.

ECA group CEO, David Pollock,

said: ‘We believe electrical contractors are perfectly positioned to provide advice on available energy-saving options. Energy- saving technologies can help reduce carbon emissions, as well as putting valuable money back into the consumer’s wallet.

‘It’s a win-win situation – it’s good for the environment, it’s good for the consumer and it’s good for the electrical contractor.’

ECA Today Summer 2010

The JTL Assessment Service has been launched because many people entering the building services industry have studied the theory through a full-time college course for up to two years but have missed out on having their

practical skills assessed. JTL operations business manager, Gail Nugent, said: ‘If a business cannot demonstrate its workforce is properly qualified, it can lead to employers not winning contracts in sensitive areas that demand certified personnel on site, as well as missing out on hiring good people who can’t prove their practical competency as they have not been assessed.’
