and its cash fl ow is affected; it affects every aspect of its business, which affects training and everything else. You expect to get paid for a decent job. The problem is,

if you’re often working for a main contractor and some of their payment practices, in my opinion, are getting worse. It takes longer to get paid, or you don’t get paid, because your main contractor becomes insolvent. How can it be fair that you’ve done the work, the client’s

paid for your work, it’s gone to the main contractor and you don’t get paid because they aren’t solvent? One thing that the ECA does that I don’t think many people

realise, is that if you’ve got a problem with getting paid, we have a department that deals with chasing up debts. When the fi rst letter goes out, it costs you absolutely nothing and in my experience, this usually has the desired effect. But they will take it right to court and give you as much expertise and knowledge as you want for a very competitive fee.

What can you realistically achieve within the time you’ve got as president?

I took on the presidency to lead on changes and really make a difference by working in unison with my ECA colleagues many of whom, like me, have lots of ambitions. If I can, with the help of the team, I’d like to increase the profi le of the ECA. Because I’m the fi rst woman president, I may get a bit more publicity and that would be fantastic. I would also
