The green

Real opportunities for business

The drive to reduce carbon emissions presents substantial challenges – but also offers significant opportunities for businesses geared up for the ‘green economy’. Paul Reeve takes a look

T

he UK’s quite staggering 80 per cent carbon reduction target for 2050 requires huge performance improvements across the entire built environment. However, this drive to slash

carbon emissions also offers some clear and present opportunities for M&E contractors working in the commercial and public sectors. We know that clients are already looking to cut energy

bills, but new legislation and stakeholder requirements are driving many clients to take an even closer look at reducing the ‘carbon footprint’ of their premises. For the client, choosing the right carbon reduction measures, and making them work together, can deliver considerable operational savings. M&E contractors – particularly if they are involved early on – are in an excellent position to help commercial clients to make the best choices. Here, we’re going to look at the opportunities for M&E contractors, and on the way, we will debunk three widely prevalent myths: n Myth 1: Sustainability is all about new ‘zero carbon’ buildings.

n Myth 2: Sustainable building is really about installing renewables.

n Myth 3: Green building services require a new breed of professional installer.
