Across the nation

In this regular forum, we spotlight what’s happening in ECA regions throughout the UK, starting with the North West and the East…

Spotlight on: North West region

The largest of the ECA’s 12 regions with over 600 members, the North West region is looked after by a dedicated team. Heading the team is Tony Cooke, regional manager, who is supported by deputy managers Stephen Hughes and Dennis Stephen and the regional office secretary, Sharon Roberts.

The North West region has eight branches covering

North Wales, the Isle of Man and the North West of England. Manchester and Liverpool are the main conurbations covered by the region.

Regional activity

The North West also hosts meetings of the Large Contractors Group, to which registered members engaged on large sites or working with the major contractors are invited. This has been found to be a useful forum in improving communications to the regionally-based representatives of the major contractors, and has helped to promote better working relationships with their subcontractors.

In addition, the Fire and Security Association (FSA) currently has its only regional meetings in the North West. These have been well-attended, concentrating on the specific issues relevant for the fire and security sectors within the electrical industry. The North West has had its fair share of major developments over recent years, and there are currently some very high-profile projects that members are involved with. Major developments that are underway include ‘Liverpool One’, a huge redevelopment of the Liverpool city centre, while in Greater Manchester there’s the MediaCityUK development in Salford Quays, which, when completed, will house recording studios and office space for 4,000 BBC staff.

One of the largest construction projects in the UK, it will also include a major hotel and apartments in a project that is aiming to build a community for digital and creative media. The first phase of the project, which will initially

West are expected to be involved in the next generation of nuclear power in the UK – five of the planned nuclear power stations to be built will also be in the North West, ranging from Sellafield in Cumbria to Wylfa on Anglesey in North Wales.
