Diane Johnson may be the first woman president in the ECA’s history, but to her that’s very much a side issue. There are plenty of more urgent issues that need addressing, as she explains to

hange is in the air. Whether it’s on the political front, the UK economy or within the electrical sector itself, the substantial challenges facing the UK are demanding new responses and fresh approaches across the board. It’s certainly an interesting time, then, for the first woman president
of the ECA to take her place in the organisation’s 109-year history. Cheshire- born businesswoman Diane Johnson, though, is relishing the challenges of her new role. A director of family firm Eric Johnson of Northwich, Johnson has been in the electrical
industry for more than 20 years, and so understands the tough experiences many other businesses have been going through over the last couple of years. She is keenly aware of the extremely difficult conditions that ECA members have had to endure, but is also sensitive to the future dangers for the industry caused by a lack of investment in training and skills – an agenda she is eager to champion in her 12-month tenure as President of the ECA. She is also aware of the opportunities the restructuring of the economy can present to businesses that are properly prepared. With her background in finance, Johnson joined her husband Ian’s family firm back in
1989. Eric Johnson of Northwich, which has been an active ECA member since 1951 and of which Ian is the managing director, supplies a range of electrical contracting services, including technical services for major installation work, high voltage installations and structured cabling for IT networks. A mother of two, Johnson got involved with the ECA at a local level at the suggestion of her
father-in-law, an active ECA member for many years. She kept going back to meetings, learnt as she progressed, securing positions at branch then regional and then national level. By her own admission, Johnson is no shrinking violet, so ECA T her opinions on a number of key issues…
