UK CARBON

TRADING SCHEME POWERS UP

TOUCHRETAIL APPOINTED BY HERVIA BAZAAR

H

New rules that come into force on 1 April will pitch some of the UK’s largest retailers against each other in a drive to cut carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. For the fi rst time large non-energy

intensive organisations, which account for about 10% of UK CO2 emissions, will be legally bound to closely monitor and report their emissions from energy use in preparation for carbon trading. The government scheme,

known as the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Effi ciency Scheme, will include household names such as Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Marks & Spencer, John Lewis, Barclays, HSBC, Hilton and Marriott. It will also include manufacturers and construction companies, for example Procter & Gamble, Unilever and Balfour Beatty. These businesses will be ranked according to reductions in energy use and improvements in energy effi ciency alongside public sector organisations such as NHS trusts, local authorities and government departments.

More than 20,000 organisations will have to register with the Environment Agency by the end of September this year. Around 5,000 of these organisations – those that used at least 6,000 Megawatt hours (MWh) of half-hourly metered electricity in 2008 – will have to report their emissions and, from 2011, buy allowances for every tonne of CO2 they emit. During the introductory phase in 2011 and 2012, allowances will be sold at a fi xed price of £12 per tonne of CO2. A cap and trade system will be introduced from 2013.

RETAIL TECHNOLOGY MARCH/APRIL 2010

ervia Bazaar, a luxury fashion store for men and women is now open on Spring Gardens

in Manchester. Magnifi cent fi ttings in the 2,000-

square-foot boutique include original cabinets from London’s Dorchester Hotel salvaged prior to its refi t, an illuminated glass curved wall and an art deco chandelier made from Murano glass as the central lighting fi xture. Among such illustrious suppliers, the retailer appointed Touchretail to manage the stock control, electronic point-of-sale (EPoS) and website interface systems for its new store. Hervia managing director, Oscar

Pinto-Hervia gained confi dence with Touchretail’s systems and support while using the services in another retail business, as the leading UK franchisee for Vivienne Westwood. Hervia Limited, run by Pinto- Hervia and Richard Duncalf, had

over 20 years experience of retail and designer fashion before deciding to concentrate solely on the UK expansion of the Vivienne Westwood Brand in 1997. Hervia was among the fi rst to sell Alexander McQueen and Helmut Lang in their Manchester award-winning boutique, Hervia from 1993-1997. Since 1995, it opened eight Vivienne Westwood mono-brand UK stores and these were all recently converted from legacy systems to Touchretail, in order to have real-time updating between retail stores, head offi ce and the website.

CUSTOMS COMPLIANCE

International food company, Heinz has signed a contract with trade and logistics IT supplier, Kewill to deliver an integrated customs solution for its European operations. The contract will see Kewill deploy its global customs solution, Kewill CustomsXchange, to Heinz’s European operations, initially in the Netherlands, UK, Spain and Italy, enabling simpler and more cost effective processing of export declarations annually. The software will be integrated with Heinz’s existing SAP enterprise

system, allowing customs information to continue to be entered locally, with Kewill CustomsXchange acting as a messaging hub, connecting Heinz with multiple customs authorities worldwide via a network of dedicated local country customs applications. The implementation, which will commence in May 2010, will provide Heinz with the ability to fi le customs declarations electronically in compliance with relevant country legislation, while automatically processing and archiving returned data such as registration numbers, duty/tax calculations and associated documents. Kewill will host and manage the solution, monitoring performance, managing exceptions and making necessary updates to ensure continuing compliance, following changes to local customs requirements. Nigel Baker, logistics development manager at Heinz commented: “Compliance with international customs regulations represented an increasing burden for Heinz that we were actively looking to reduce. We were already working with Kewill and were confi dent in their expertise in this area.”
