RETAILERS BOOST IN-STORE SECURITY
during the current downturn. Not only are consumers curbing their spending but reports from both retailers and police indicate that as unemployment increases, there is a corresponding rise in shoplifting. However, it’s not all doom and gloom. Research from the annual Global Retail Theft Barometer (GRTB) shows that in contrast to the prevailing trend, a number do in fact manage to improve their shrinkage fi gures. As thieves become savvier, retailers are responding with more sophisticated methods of protection to not only prevent thieves getting away with the merchandise but to also stop the attempted theft taking place.

All retailers have one thing in mind when tackling shrink management – how to detect and prevent theft while simultaneously creating an environment that encourages customers to shop freely and easily. Highly advanced electronic article surveillance (EAS) systems improve detection rates and give retail store employees greater confi dence in their security systems’ accuracy and responsiveness. Subsequently, retail staff can work more effi ciently and focus on what matters most – helping customers. A number of retailers have been using EAS technology with great success, according to Neil Matthews, vice president of Checkpoint Systems’ NCE unit. Matthews told Retail Technology that
luxury British brand Mulberry recently implemented an EAS system from Alpha High Theft Solutions (a division of Checkpoint Systems) to help protect its range of handbags and purses from theft. “Alpha 3 Alarm CableLok high-theft security devices have been installed on goods in all House of Fraser and Selfridges concessions across the UK, meaning the iconic fashion accessories can be displayed in an open retail environment safely and securely,” he added.
“Crombie is another luxury British retailer who realised the importance of having

istorically, retail has been one of the fi rst sectors to feel the effects of a recession, and it is no different
to migrate to a combined RFID [radio frequency identifi cation] and source tagging programme,” he continued. “After installing Checkpoint’s Style and Plaza EAS antennae to reduce theft, Crombie saw a great improvement in its stock loss fi gures in just a few months. One store in particular, that at one stage was recording the highest level of stock loss across the whole estate, has already achieved a 50% reduction in shrinkage.
“And it is not just apparel retailers tackling
a high-level shrink management system as the credit crunch started to bite. The apparel retailer had been experiencing high shrinkage levels on certain product lines and needed a solution to address shrinkage in standalone stores and concessions while laying the foundations for long-term plans
the rise in shoplifting,” added Matthews. “Checkpoint’s Alpha High Theft Solutions division has also helped leading cash and carry wholesaler Makro cut shrinkage of its high-risk merchandise by 40% by the implementation of a three-tier anti-theft protection programme. The installation of Spider Wraps, Keepers and Alpha Accessory Tags has helped Makro increase sales on its key lines – iPods, cameras, razors and plasma screen TVs – by 50%.”
LOG MANAGEMENT PROVES COMPLIANCE KEY
Camelot, the licensed operator of the UK’s National Lottery and Ventura, a subsidiary of Next Group and one of the UK’s largest customer management outsourcers are implementing a log management, log analysis and event management solution from LogRhythm.
The implementation will help secure both companies’ web-based services, ensure
Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) and ISO27001 compliance and reduce network management costs. Camelot has selected LogRhythm to provide an integrated security information
and event management (SIEM) solution. Paul Jay, Camelot head of information security, commented: “I selected LogRhythm as it offered Camelot a highly effective solution for addressing both our security and compliance requirements, while substantially reducing the operational overhead traditionally associated with log and event management.” Mark Wityszyn, Ventura IT security manager, also said: “LogRhythm has given us
network visibility, transforming how we monitor and manage our IT infrastructure and applications. By continually monitoring network activity and fl agging potential problems as and when they occur, LogRhythm assures us that there are no network issues that we are unaware of. Today, we can carry out full and detailed log analysis within a couple of hours.” Beyond PCI DSS compliance, Ventura is using LogRhythm to monitor activity on the separate systems it operates on behalf of its clients.
