After an intense PR campaign, Alton Towers launched the world’s first free fall drop coaster on March 20. Not for the faint hearted, TH13TEEN takes riders on an exhilarating journey through a previously unexplored woodland area of the park

he new ride forms part of The Dark Forest, where it replaces the Corkscrew, the looping Vekoma coaster that transformed the fortunes of the British park in the early ‘80s. TH13TEEN is a very different ride, which relies on a macabre storyline and extensive theming, in addition to the ride itself, to thrill its guests. The park kept the public, and indeed the coaster enthusiasts, guessing about the ride’s exact content right up until opening. The Intamin-built ride system features three 20-seat trains ride and reaches speeds of up to 67km/h as it makes its way through the forest.

Alton Towers adds new coaster experiences
Adding to the experience, a portion of the ride takes place in the dark, and the train travels backwards for a short time.
This season Alton Towers guests can also enjoy a new look coaster called Sonic Spinball. Previously known as Spinball Whizzer, the spinning coaster from Maurer Söhne has been rethemed in tribute to computer game hero Sonic the Hedgehog.
