Robotland
New park promised for 2013
Scheduled to open in 2013, subject to funding, Robotland is a one-of-a-kind theme park planned for the South Korean city of Incheon, less than an hour from Seoul.
The park will be split into four lands – Robot Kingdom, KIdbot Village,
Robotopia and Fun City – and feature more than 26 rides and attractions, including rollercoasters, river rapids, a drop tower and 4D cinema. Included among various shows and information pavilions will be a robot parade. A robot education centre, games arena and convention centre is also planned for the park. Park representatives expect Robotland to attract around 2.8 million annual guests and describe the venture as a "fourth generation" theme park.” Disneyland, for example, is a first generation park focusing on a dream and fantasy, while Sea World is a second generation park, focusing on animals and nature. EPCOT, with its high-tech and space focus, is a third generation park.
Developers are now in the process of trying to find sponsors and investors in order to partially fund construction, which is due to begin in November. Opening is planned for April 2013.
KMG unleashes a Monster
KMG was granted German TÜV approval last month for its second XXL swing ride. The mammoth machine, named Monster, is due to be delivered to Swiss showman HP Maier. The attraction seats 20 people per ride, swings 45-metres high and has a footprint of 13 x 18 metres. Mounted on three semi-trailers, the ride can be erected without a crane in six hours by four staff. Features include remote control hydraulics, stainless steel handrails, scenic panels, LED lighting and an integrated Hofman sound system. The ride’s owner is hoping for a position at this year’s Munich Oktoberfest, explaining the abundance of blue and white checks – in tribute to the Bavarian flag. Monster will be Maier’s 9th KMG attraction. At present the family also operates an Afterburner swing and Speed propeller ride by the Dutch manufacturer. A third XXL is planned for May 2010 delivery to Belgian showman Jack Dotremont.
Coney Island Cyclone sails again
The world-famous Coney Island Cyclone, Brooklyn, New York, opened for its 83rd season on Sunday, March 28. Since 1927, the legendary wooden construction has been the definitive ride at Coney Island, the coaster to which all others are compared. The ride was designated a New York City landmark in 1988. "We are once again proud to be opening another season of the world- famous Coney Island Cyclone,” says Carol Hill Albert, whose family has been operating the rollercoaster since 1975. “With the arrival of the new Luna Park, this truly will be one of the most exciting summers in Coney in a long time.”
According to Albert, “The Cyclone crew has been working all winter to polish, shine, replace and renew the Cyclone from stem to stern. She's ready to sail, and so we say, with our annual Brooklyn Christening, ‘Welcome and All Aboard!’"
Festive films from Red Star
UK animation studio Red Star has appointed The Juice as the exclusive worldwide distributor for its upcoming films Dracula 4D and Sleigh Ride. The brand management company will also produce and market branded merchandise for the films.
The Juice is a partnership between Red Star’s former sales and marketing
director, James Brocklehurst, and Pauline Quayle. Released for Halloween, Dracula 4D brings the world famous vampire to the 3D/4D arena for the very first time, while Sleigh Ride is perfect for the Christmas holiday season. "We have listened carefully to the requirements of the attractions industry and developed seasonal, branded films and films that fully utilise the 4D effects popular in venues right now,” says Red Star’s Ben Smith. “By adding branded merchandise we think we've got a winning combination for venues worldwide!"

Sum of all Thrills
Located within the Innovations pavilion of EPCOT at Walt Disney World in Florida, Sum of all Thrills allows guests to custom-design their own thrill ride using mathematical tools, touch-screen controls and a robotic simulator. The ride system is based around KUKA Robotics’ RoboSim 4D simulator and offers over 1.4 million possible programmable combinations utilising six axes and six degrees of total directional freedom. Once guests have designed their ride, it is saved on a card, which is used to activate their custom ride experience on one of four robotic units.
Sum of all Thrills is sponsored
by Raytheon. EPCOT visitors can continue the fun after they return home by visiting the website www.MathMovesU.com, where they can answer maths related questions and build further rides online. Fortunately they don’t have to be any good at spelling.
