Award Winning Green Plastic Product Has Legs

A 25-year-old product design engineer, Gary Poolman, is UK-based Axion Polymers’s first- ever Green Product Design Competition winner. His product, Wazzon, is a clever gadget for quickly drying plastic sandwich bags so they can be washed and re-used. Designed to be made from Axion’s 100% recycled plastic Axpoly compound, the injection-moulded, three-pronged Wazzon can also be used to dry other types of bags and items, such as rubber gloves. Mr Poolman, who will work with Axion on taking his product to market, received a £500 cash prize from Axion’s director Keith Freegard on March 16, 2010. The Wazzon was picked from a shortlist of five by a panel of external judges, which included two politicians, a director of a university, a social responsibility advisor at a leading UK retailer and an experienced industrial designer.

Ceramicx prepares for Far Eastern mission

Ireland-based International heating systems specialist and manufacturer Ceramicx is preparing to take its “heat work” expertise to a number of Far Eastern destinations in April, culminating in a two day visit to Chinaplas in Shanghai on April 19 - 22. The founder and

managing director of Cermicx, Frank Wilson, said: “The areas where east meets west are always interesting places—technically, socially and culturally. At Ceramicx we are looking forward to sharing our European-based infrared heating know-how in a number of manufacturing sectors—and particularly in plastics where our infrared systems for thermoformers have a guaranteed quality for both machine builders and plastics processors.” Frank’s first April stop will be South Korea. He commented: “Korean manufacturing is still very dynamic—driven on by the likes of Samsung, LG and others. As well as infrared, Ceramicx will be offering its process control know-how to these OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) and their suppliers.” And in relation to Ceramicx’s trip to China, Mr Wilson pointed out: “The Far Eastern team at

Enterprise Ireland have been invaluable in helping the Ceramicx preparation for the outward mission. Alan Buckley, Cathy Houlihan and Xiaojing Yue at Enterprise Ireland have all helped us immensely in the desk research and contact work needed for this project. Markets as specific as resin curing, infrared oven drying, thermoforming and others really are of a different scale and structure in China and the Far East. We have spent a lot of careful time identifying our likely audience—and ways to reach them in China and at Chinaplas this year.”
