From the Editor

Since I started editing EPPM I have read a wide range of news stories from many different types of manufacturers and industry representatives. Having familiarised myself with EPPM’s network of suppliers of information and tallying this with its regular sections and feature topics, I am pleased to present this April issue of EPPM. You’ll be happy to read that K 2010 has begun releasing information about the show, due to be held from October 27 to November 3, 2010. Turn to page 25 for an interview with the show’s director, Petra Cullman, and other news about the show.

In the UK registration began for a mandatory government-led carbon trading scheme on April 1, 2010 (see Industry News on page 32). Any manufacturer which uses more than 6,000 MWh per year of electricity—around £500,000 worth—must participate in the programme. The commencement of this scheme is a significant development because it forces companies to think more carefully about their carbon dioxide emissions. For many plastics manufacturers, compliance with the scheme will be expensive, and not only because participants will have to implement new financial and audit procedures to manage their carbon trading activities. On the other hand, mandatory participation in the scheme will encourage the development of new technology—which will help plastic processors to reduce their carbon emissions, furthering Europe’s plastic machinery industry. Europe’s machinery and polymer suppliers are leading the way in terms of technological developments for greener manufacturing. As a result, as plastic industries in less developed countries in Asia and the Middle East also begin to yearn for reduced carbon emissions, European manufacturers will be well-placed to supply technology which will meet these needs, and more.

On the subject of the Middle East, I am also the Editor of Middle East Plastics (MEP)—a sister publication to EPPM which provides news from suppliers of new products for plastics processors operating in the Middle East. I have joined the title while it is still in its infancy—just 5 issues have been produced so far—but we already have a circulation of 6,000 in the Middle East, and this number is expected to grow rapidly. I am looking forward to using my experience as an economist in the oil and gas sector and an editor of research-based reports in the textiles and clothing industry to broaden the scope of the magazine so that we can reach a wider audience. With this in mind, if you know of someone who is in the process of extending their reach to the Middle East, or has done so already, I am very keen to hear from you. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy my first issue of EPPM.
