initiative is centered on communicating the company’s five core values, namely safety, integrity, teamwork, social responsibility and innovation. In addition, it aims to explain a commitment to responsible manufacturing through its five pillars of sustainability—the environment, the community, the workplace, the marketplace and the economy. When commenting on the initiative, Amcor’s managing director and CEO, Ken MacKenzie, said: “The brandmark and other symbols of our new identity reflect a new and progressive organisation of people dedicated to innovation and committed to sustainability. With more than 300 sites across 43 countries, a strong, unified brand across all our operations and geographies is an important part of our future. As we grow and create industry leading benchmarks in packaging, our brand will represent and support our messages, relationships and reputation.” A digital flashbooklet, entitled The New Face of Amcor, describes the initiative in more detail and is available at the company’s website.

Compact Line Designed for Cast Coex Stretch Film

Italian manufacturer Torninova has introduced a dedicated line for cast coextruded PE stretch film. The first machine was installed in Italy in December and the second is currently undergoing final trials before installation at a film producer elsewhere in Europe. The Compact Stretch makes film to an ABC structure, 1,000 mm wide in thicknesses from 8 to 40 microns. It runs at 550 kg/h and more than 500 m/min, with one operator. The melt is prepared in LLPowerex extruders with AC motors and infrared heaters to reduce

maintenance and energy consumption, and with screw profiles developed specifically for linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE). The Swiftcool chill-roll unit has dual cooling rollers and a dual-chamber air knife with an integrated x-ray thickness gauge which can also work with coloured stretch film. Film is

wound on a Quicksilver-4S winder which has a change time of 12 seconds and can rewind to reels suitable for manual and automatic use, in widths of 125 mm, 250 mm, 450 mm and 500 mm. Edge trim is returned to process by the Fullfeed trimming system which can compensate for variations in pressure despite frequent changes in production conditions and operating speed. The 1,000 mm Compact Stretch line can produce more than 400 reels manually per hour. The reels are packaged automatically in a six-to-a-carton-board box.

Itac’s Process Control Reporting System Provides Proof of Quality

Itac, a UK-based independent coating and adhesive manufacturer, has introduced a new quality reporting system which can reduce the time spent inspecting product quality. Itac originally developed the system in order to improve its service and enhance its competitiveness. However, Itac is now selling the system to other manufacturers. The basic function of the system is to record and review critical product parameters—also known as critical to function (CTF) parameters. This data is made available electronically to Itac’s customers in graphical and tabular format. The information indicates, at a glance, the CTF parameters of each batch whilst it is in production. As a result, a customer is able to continuously review and refine production specifications and methods as appropriate. According to Paul Armitt, Itac’s managing director: “Customers can see the clear benefits of the system we have developed. It provides so much more information, by measuring repeatability, which is especially relevant when highly challenging process tolerances are required. It also delivers a remarkable level of reassurance and confidence in all we are achieving. The feedback I am getting is totally positive.”
