Perrite Supplies Polymer for Revolutionary Dyson Fan
To a storm of media interest, Dyson launched their revolutionary Air Multiplier fan in 2009. UK-based Perrite is a key supplier to Dyson and at the time of its launch supplied all the polymer resins for the fan. The Dyson Air Multiplier fan has no blades. Instead, it uses Air Multiplier technology to amplify air 15 times, expelling 405 litres of cool, smooth and uninterrupted air
every second. Air is accelerated through an annular aperture set within the loop amplifier. This creates a jet of air which passes over an airfoil-shaped ramp that channels its direction. Surrounding air is drawn into the airflow (this is called inducement and entrainment). Tom Crawford, Dyson's design manager, described the effect as being like cards sliding off a deck, each pulling the next with it. According to Dyson’s founder, James Dyson: “I’ve always been disappointed by fans. Their spinning blades chop up the airflow, causing annoying buffeting. They’re hard to clean. And children always want to poke their fingers through the grille. So we’ve developed a new type of fan that doesn’t use blades.” Perrite has supplied product to Dyson since 1995 and in 2003 Vita, Perrite’s parent company, opened the Perrite Malaysia site to supply polymer to Dyson’s Asian operations. According to the company, the supply partnership is as strong as ever, with colour and development work carried out in Malaysia and at the UK laboratory, and local supply and support from Perrite Malaysia.

UK Flexible Film Specialist is Delighted with Fischer & Krecke (F&K) SmartGPS Printing Press
UK-based flexible film producer Roberts Mart & Co has acquired a new Fischer & Krecke (F&K) flexographic printing press, model FP–14S,
incorporating SmartGPS System. It has also acquired a new Titan slitting and rewinding machine, model ER610. The total investment was £2 million. The new F&K press is a fully gearless machine with direct drive to the central impression (CI) cylinder that uses sleeve technology for both printing plates and anilox. The machine, which joins three existing flexo machines, incorporates a new “retractable” inter-colour dryer design for maximum accessibility as well as an advanced operator control system. When commenting on the investment, the managing director of Roberts Mart, William Roberts, said: “After trials using our own materials at F&K in Bielefeld, Germany, we concluded that this press was exceptionally stable and the results using SmartGPS very decisive. We concluded that SmartGPS would be a very important key to our investment since we are strong believers in automation and we could see immediately that the SmartGPS system would significantly reduce start-up waste (especially materials and energy) in addition to greatly reducing set-up times, whilst also providing the correct print impression with the first “kiss” of the plate to substrate.” Mr Roberts added: “Today, with the SmartGPS system, all the above parameters for register and impression (measuring the topography of the mounted plates) are measured and down- loaded to a radio frequency identification chip in the plate sleeve during plate mounting. Once the sleeves are loaded into the machine all data is transmitted immediately to the machine computer. All this is achieved whilst the machine is at a standstill.”

Gabriel-Chemie Opens Laboratory in Poland
With the opening of a laboratory in Lodz, Poland, the Austria- based Gabriel-Chemie Group continues its growth in Europe. In doing so, the company has strengthened its position as an internationally oriented masterbatch manufacturer. In addition, its presence on the Polish market brings significant advantages for existing customers of colour matchings. According to the company’s CEO, DI Rodolfo Santa Olalla: “We have already had a sales office in Poland for six years now. Our circle of customers is constantly increasing and we see a rising need for fast reaction. A local laboratory offers our customers better and faster service.” He added: “This is also an important step towards improving the cooperation with large internationally operating customers and providing trans-national support.” At the same time as the opening of the laboratory in Poland, Gabriel-Chemie
established another Sales Office in
Zagreb, Croatia, with the aim of delivering additive-, colour- and combination- masterbatches to local plastics processors.
