Executive Interview: Industry Puts Faith in K 2010
As we pull away from the challenging economic conditions of 2009, the world’s plastics and rubber industries have put their faith in K 2010—the leading international trade fair for plastics and rubber to be held in Düsseldorf, Germany, on October 27 to November 3, 2010.
There is a great deal of confidence in the event, as reflected by high registration figures. Indeed, all 19 halls will be occupied by some 3,000 exhibitors. A strong visitor presence is also expected.
The show’s director, Petra Cullman, is busy preparing for the show. However, she has kindly taken time to talk to EPPM’s new editor, Sam Anson, to give us the inside view on what to expect from the K show in 2010.
Sam Anson: Many companies regard regular attendance at K as a key priority. Why is this year’s show especially important?
Petra Cullman: For all sectors of the industry, the message is clear. In the long term, productivity and competitiveness can only be increased if they are based on innovations. Exhibitors at K 2010 will again be presenting an impressive selection of new
developments—new and improved products which signify maximum benefit for users in their daily business. It is all about performance enhancements in machinery, improvements in product quality, materials with enhanced performance, new process
combinations and new approaches to substituting traditional materials.
Sam Anson: So what's new at K 2010?
Petra Cullman: A new feature introduced for K 2010 is the Innovation Compass. This tool offers a digital search engine, allowing every visitor to precisely plan their visit to the fair according to the products that will be of most interest to them. The Innovation Compass will be available online about four to six weeks prior to the start of K 2010.
Sam Anson: For those who have not been before, on which areas of the industry will there be a special focus?
Petra Cullman: In addition to innovative machine concepts for cost-effective designs and lower energy bills, K 2010 will focus on new performance properties of materials, renewable and biodegradeable raw materials, stain resistant lightweight fibre composites, simplified processing techniques and integrated and optimised manufacturing processes. Furthermore, a special review, entitled Visions in Polymers, will provide information about key trends and innovations in the industry. Special emphasis will be placed on the themes of energy efficiency and resource conservation.
Sam Anson: How many exhibitors have signed up and where are they from?
Petra Cullman: More than 3,000 companies from every continent have signed up. Suppliers from Austria, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, the UK and the USA will be especially strongly represented, as will Asian manufacturers from China, India and Taiwan.
Sam Anson: Which sectors of the industry are mainly being targeted?
Petra Cullman: All exhibitors presenting raw materials or machinery and equipment have plastics processors as their target group. However, close to half of these also target manufacturers of semi-finished products and technical parts made from plastics and rubber used in other industries. K attracts an abundance of visitors from other industries, especially automotives, medical, electrical engineering and electronics, transportation, packaging, logistics and consumer products. Although these people are not strictly part of the plastics sector they come to the show to find out more about plastics applications and new approaches to substituting traditional materials.
Sam Anson: How does it compare with other shows in the industry?
Petra Cullman: I believe that there is nowhere else where such a wide range of technology for raw materials, processing and applications can be experienced as comprehensively as at K in Düsseldorf. The fact is that compounding, extrusion and blow moulding technology can be seen in action in a high level of detail while production cells with injection moulding machines, sophisticated process combinations and a variety of other applications can be viewed at one show. Also, there is nowhere else where there are as many producers of raw materials, dyes and pigments and reinforcing materials and fillers as at K 2010 in Düsseldorf.
