Crash course

With furious drivers continually complaining about their cars being scratched by learner drivers – known as L-Platers – Australian councils are establishing ‘L Zone’ car parks. To create a

comfortable environment for patrons, even the car park attendants are beginners. If the trials are

successful, each car park may establish L-Plate- only areas.

MY DREAM JOB…

It is an unusual career change but Emily Mortimer, the Oxford-educated daughter of the late Sir John Mortimer, has said that she would like to swap her life as an actress for a position as civil enforcement offi cer. Explaining her desire to swap her existence as a stage and screen star for a job as a CEO, she said: ‘I was doing a play and I was so outraged by all the pressure I was put under. I remember walking through the car park and seeing a man in a kiosk, and I remember yearning to be in that kiosk, just watching television and eating a sandwich.’ Displaying just how in touch with life as a CEO she is, Mortimer continued: ‘I

want something that requires nothing more from me than to sit in a warm box and take people’s money.’

AND MY NIGHTMARE JOB…

A civil enforcement offi cer in Sweden was told by a judge that part of her job description was that she would

‘make people indignant,’ and that she should be prepared for ‘threats and attacks.’ A driver had tried

to throttle Solveig Bellgran, over a £25 fi ne, before driving off shouting verbal abuse. In a Malmo court,

the man was fi ned and given a suspended sentence but in her summing up the judge said the victim would not get damages as it was ‘part of the job.’ Bellgran said: ‘It feels

like it is now open for the public to spit in my face or strangle me.’

BPA ARCHIVES SPOTLIGHT ON 1969-70

Towards the end of 1970 the BPA reached a major landmark in welcoming its 100th member, an overseas company – in fact, from the Netherlands. Incidentally, membership fees in 1970 were £15.0s.0d for commercial members, £10.10s.0d for municipal members and £2.0s.0d for private members.

The BPA technical committee was set up in this year, and one of its fi rst tasks was the possibility of a dimension change from imperial to metric untis. The committee produced a draft technical note called the Metric Dimensions for Car Parks. Also drafted in 1970 was the specifi cation for clockwork parking meters. It was stressed that other types might eventually be produced, and the draft was for the design and maintenance of parking meters of the automatic or manual type and driven by clockwork mechanisms. Today this BS Standards specifi cation is BS6571 Part One.
