Feel-good factor in Leeds

PARK AT ASTON
There has been a flurry of activity among local authority parking departments in the Midlands seeking Park Mark accreditation under the Safer Parking Scheme (SPS). The University of Aston has
joined the scheme and put forward nine sites for
accreditation, while one site at Melton Borough Council has gained the award and several
others are awaiting inspection. Also joining the scheme and identifying suitable sites for accreditation are Wyre Forest Council in Worcestershire and Harborough Council in Leicestershire. And in
Birmingham, the new ASDA store at Chelmsley Wood has been awarded the Park Mark under the Safer Parking Scheme.
Car park is real curtain-raiser
Plymouth’s Teatre Royal car park has won a Park Mark award for safety following a £500,000 refurbishment. Te Teatre Royal
car park has been transformed under the project, with a new customer-friendly pay-on-foot payment system, a customer services lodge and a range of new facilities for motorists. Other improvements
at the 612-space multi-storey car park
include: l New CCTV cameras on all parking levels and stairwells, monitored 24 hours a day by control room staff and police
officers;

throughout the car park; l A new, barrier-
controlled access system and new vehicle entry
and exit points; l A new customer lift offering convenient
access to all floors; l Permanent staffing and help for disabled
customers; l New, customer- friendly signs that are easier to read;
l Different coloured walls and pillars on each floor to make it easier for motorists to remember where they
have parked; l Cleaned and repainted stairwells with new doors on
each level; l Te city’s first electric car charging station, which is free to use and caters for all types of
electric car; and l A dedicated floor
for disabled drivers and extra parent-and- toddler bays on level two, where children’s artwork will soon be added to the walls for a real family feel. Chas Cannon,
development manager for the Safer Parking Scheme in the south west said: ‘Tis
particular car park suffered in the past from incidents of anti- social behaviour but, by implementing measures recommended by the scheme, these incidents have been significantly reduced. ‘We have had no
complaints about anti- social behaviour at the car park in the last three months.’
