Hard times and better times
Patrick Troy was delighted that Parkex broke all previous records for attendance this year and that the British Parking Awards also attracted record numbers
O
f all the years for these records to be broken, it is surprising it happened at a time when the UK economy is shrinking so
alarmingly and when our local authority members are preparing for a major assault on their budgets. It is a reflection of the robustness of the
parking profession, in its desire to deliver high quality services to the public despite the economic situation. Tat situation has taken its toll on the
BPA as well. In response I have reduced our core costs by some £87,000 by reducing overall costs or charging them, where legitimate, to other profit centres. At the same time we’ve developed policies to ensure our purchases achieve value for money for members, and we always procure services fairly and achieve the most economically advantageous deal. We have also ended our contract

with our PR agent Weber Shandwick and brought that service in-house. You may have seen that, to achieve this, we advertised the role of head of communications – to which I was pleased to appoint Emily McCunn. Tis new arrangement delivers further cost- savings for the BPA, while investing in the expertise brought to the communications

portfolio by Emily and her new team of Ali Tooze and Dave Smith. Richard Bickell retired at the end of
March after contributing significantly to the ongoing success of both the Approved Operator Scheme and the Safer Parking Scheme. He leaves an impressive legacy of excellence in these areas, and I would like to add my thanks to him for a job well done. Gary Lee has now joined the team to drive forward some of the great challenges that lie ahead for the AOS. I hope that the new financial year, which
started on 1 April, will see better times for the BPA – and that the wider profession will continue to flourish in a way that Parkex and the British Parking Awards certainly seems to suggest it is already.
