Virgin Life Care team planted a vegetable garden at a school in a very poor area to help provide nutritious meals for the kids

Sow-A-Seed turns vacant pieces of land into thriving veggie gardens and involves the community in caring for its garden and educates the people about basic nutrition. The Virgin Life Care staff have been actively involved in planting the gardens and their sponsorship buys compost, seeds and gardening equipment.

Virgin Spa

Virgin Spa in South Africa has embraced the African spirit of ubuntu – good neighbourliness and respect for those it lives and works among. It has worked hard to ensure it has a positive impact on local communities by carrying out the following initiatives:

• employing women from disadvantaged communities with plans to establish an in-house academy to train disadvantaged youngsters as spa therapists

• buying galvanised iron buckets and foot bowls, used in treatments, from Zimbabwean street traders

• using local indigenous ingredients in its

products wherever possible.

Virgin Active South Africa has supported the BSoE with: • guest lectures • mentoring • its MD sits on its board • fundraising events and competitions

• strategy workshops

For Virgin Active South Africa there is the added challenge

of its employees’ health and wellbeing, since HIV/AIDS is such a major concern. It is by far the biggest health issue

in South Africa with a prevalence rate of around 28% of the population11 . Since 2005 Active South Africa has run

the Direct AIDS Intervention programme for its employees, which offers a broad range of services including HIV/ AIDS awareness training and education, voluntary counselling and testing, clinical management of HIV/AIDS, 24 hour telephone counselling and home delivery of medication. It is run by a professional team of registered medical practitioners, specialist physicians, nurses, clinical psychologists, psychiatrists and social workers.
