Virgin Active South Africa target:

Water recycling systems to be fully installed and functional in 10 % of its clubs by mid 2010.

Water

Health clubs use a considerable amount of water (swimming pools, spa areas, showers, irrigation of playing fields and tennis courts) so it’s important to be as efficient as possible. For this reason, the Active clubs use a whole range of measures such as:

• making use of ‘greywater’ from the pool to flush toilets

• having taps and showers on timers

• using an extensive filtration processes for the pools which allows clean pool water to be re- circulated

• using rainwater for irrigation

• using water from wells to flush the toilets and for use in the technical plant

• encouraging members to limit their water use

Looking ahead

Virgin Active has some excellent examples of best practice in its clubs and is working hard to share these across clubs in different countries. It also continues to benchmark its clubs against competitors to ensure they continue to demonstrate leadership. Virgin Active recognises the need to set targets on energy and water reduction . Water is a key focus in South Africa – Virgin Active is the 70th largest user of water in the country – so more and more measures will be put into place to reduce its water footprint.

Social impacts

Virgin Active, by the very nature of its physical presence, has a responsibility to the communities in which it operates.

• Virgin Active in the UK is working with charities to engage young people in healthier lifestyles and is providing opportunities for them to access fitness equipment without club membership

Greywater is

wastewater generated from domestic activities such as showering, washing and laundry. Water from toilets is called blackwater.

Twelve of the clubs in South Africa and one of the UK clubs carry out greywater recycling, using ‘greywater’ from the pool to flush the toilet.

The advantage of

using water from wells is that the water does not have to go through the treatment process that normal drinking water does, meaning that the water has a much lower carbon footprint.
