Virgin Limited Edition, which owns and manages properties, has considerable scope for reducing its impacts. Each property is working individually to reduce its environmental footprint and Virgin Limited Edition has set an ambitious target to achieve the gold standard for all its properties within the next two years through Travelife10

.

So far both Ulusaba Private Game Reserve and The Lodge in Verbier have been audited and have achieved Travelife Gold. To be awarded Travelife Gold all the properties will need to demonstrate that advanced sustainability actions have been taken and must be able to prove continual improvements, as well as how they are actively communicating their progress.

Progress to date in the Virgin Limited Edition properties includes:

• Kasbah Tamadot has installed 66 solar panels to heat the swimming pool and hotel

• Ulusaba Private Game Reserve has installed solar panels to power the airstrip building and uses geysers for heating hot water

• The Lodge in Verbier, Switzerland uses latent heat from two powered ventilation systems to heat the pool and jacuzzi thus reducing their energy consumption. The Lodge also operates on 100% hydropower and for its recent refurbishment it made sure that all timber and wooden furniture were from reclaimed sources

• The Roof Gardens is planning to compost 100% of its clean garden waste and install a wormery as well as trying to source locally as much of its food as possible to reduce food miles

• Necker Island has ordered a wind turbine which will provide 25% of its power

• all Virgin Limited Edition properties have set targets to increase bulk purchasing, recycling and composting wherever possible. Waste in luxury properties is always a challenge but one which the Virgin Limited Edition properties are actively addressing following environmental audits

• Virgin Limited Edition has a ‘red’ food list detailing foods they will not buy, for example foie gras, and they make use of the WWF sustainable endangered fish list.

A Wormery is a great way to reduce the amount and transport costs of taking food waste to landfill. It is simply a container containing worms that composts waste food and creates a high nutrient fertiliser.
