PHOTOGRAPHY BY SIMON CLUBB

On the 18th April 2009, Virginia and Michael Cryle experienced the best day of their lives as they finally became ‘husband and wife’.

Surrounded by the joy of their much loved family and friends, the newly married couple smiled and laughed the whole day, relishing every single minute. The whole day was truly perfect! Well almost. For Virginia, the only downfall was that the day went by far too quickly! There was a solution however …

The couple’s wedding photographer, Simon Clubb, made an offer to Virginia which she simply couldn’t refuse. An offer which would give her the chance to wear her dream dress one last time, what a perfect opportunity! Well almost - Simon’s offer happened to involve the words ‘trash’ and ‘dress’ in the same sentence!

Q: A:

What was your initial reaction and thoughts when Simon Clubb suggested that you trash your dream dress?

Simon had asked if it was something I wanted to do and I thought - why not?! Simon had some fabulous ideas of where to take the pictures and I was happy to go along with it, as I know his ideas always look great.

Can you give a description of your dress?

With huge thanks to my generous mum, I was able to have the dress I had always wanted! I designed the dress myself based upon certain things I liked about other dresses and in the end it was just as I had always imag- ined - ivory with a fitted bodice and a rather large but striking skirt. The detail on the bodice and skirt was amazing and I just loved everything about it. Although, it was quite tiring carrying it around all day!

What date and location did you choose for the trashing of your dress?

The date was set for the 15th November 2009 and the location was Aberdeen. We went to the harbour, the pier and down to the beach. Simon also took a few pictures at some local, well-known spots in the city centre. I love his ideas - although I did get some rather curious looks from passersby who seemed oddly intrigued!

What was the weather and temperature like on the day?

It was cold but dry. The sun was shining which is quite a rarity in Aberdeen, especially in November.

What methods did you use to trash your dress?

Well, my mum was there making sure I didn't do anything severe that couldn’t be rectified at the drycleaners! To be honest, it was really quite civilised, although I’m sure Simon was quietly restrained as he knew I didn't want to ruin my dress forever. We tried to find some grungy locations to contrast the dress and also took some shots in places you would never expect to see a bride in.

Q: A:

What was the best part of your overall ‘trash the dress’ experience?

The best part was putting my dress on again. I am so glad I had the opportunity to wear it once more and have some unique photos taken in it. I didn't want to put my dress away after the wedding and so this was the perfect chance to put it on again and do something a bit different!

Do you still have your wedding dress or did it have to get binned?

I do still have the dress and I’m just about to get it dry cleaned and boxed to preserve it. I am just so happy I got to wear it again.

How did Michael feel about the idea of you trashing your dress?

He did not mind at all. I think he was pleased that I had the opportunity to wear it again and have more photos taken, as I probably would never have worn it again other- wise. The experience has left me with great memories and fantastic images, some of which will proudly be put on show in our house!

Q: A:

Any regrets?

Absolutely not. I am very happy to have done this and would recommend it to any bride who wants to put their special dress on again and enjoy it. With a photographer like Simon Clubb, it was easy, he put me at ease and always has some great ideas. I trusted that the shoot would turn out well and it definitely did. I have no regrets at all and would do it all over again - as I would the whole wedding!
