KI LTS
BUCKLE
Keep him in
Kilt
The kilt should be well-pressed and sit high on the waist, just
the swing of it!
below the bottom rib, with the pleats to the rear. The bottom of the kilt should sit anywhere from the top of the knee to halfway down the knee. Make sure the kilt is centered properly and that the buckles are secure but not too tight. Also, if purchasing a new kilt it will often have white tacking stitches to keep the pleats flat so don’t forget to carefully remove these!
Kilt Pin
The kilt pin is purely for decoration and is attached to the
front of the kilt on the open fringed side. It should be placed approximately 5cm from the side and 15cm from the bottom of the kilt.
Jacket
For a semi-formal occasion it is suggested that an Argyll
jacket is worn with a regular shirt, tie and a semi-dress sporran. For formal occasions the Prince Charlie jacket or doublet is usually worn with a white dress shirt (often winged collar), bow tie and a full dress sporran.
Belt, Buckle & Sporran
If you choose to wear a belt and buckle, ensure that it sits at
the top of the kilt covering the kilt's waistband. Letting the sporran hang too low is a common mistake and will subsequently spoil the way the kilt hangs. The ideal height is usually 4 finger widths below the belt or bottom of the waistcoat.

Kilt Hose (socks)
For formal events, traditionally cream hose are worn or
occasionally tartan (however hand-knitted tartan hose can be expensive). Whatever you decide, make sure you do not wear white socks! These days, however, to wear darker coloured socks (usually black) is becoming increasingly popular.
Flashes
Pull the hose up over the knee and attach the flashes (just
below the knee). It is important to make sure that the flashes hang to the outside of the leg. Next, fold the hose down and allow approx 2.5 – 3inches of the flashes to show and ensure there’s a space between the top of the hose and bottom of the knee. Any seams on the hose should be straight.
Sgian Dubh
This small decorative dagger is traditionally worn in the top of
the kilt with only the handle visible. To be worn on the outside of the hose on the right leg if you are right handed and on the left if you are left handed.
Ghillie Brogues
The black leather shoes with the daunting long laces! Not to
worry – Start by tying the laces into a simple single knot, then take the two ends of the lace and twist them around each other about 5 or 6 times. When pulled tight this gives a solid line upwards from the first knot. Now, pass both ends of the lace around the leg a few times and to finish - tie a bow on the outside of the leg halfway between calf & ankle!
