58 DOORS, WINDOWS & GLAZING SYSTEMS
Protecting people and property The expertise of Sapa Building Systems has been called into play for the design and building of the new Welsh Assembly Government office as they were one of the few companies able to supply a blast resistant glazing system robust enough to meet government security requirements. The contract included the provision of Powerframe curtain walling, windows and doors to give fully enhanced glazing. Fully independently tested under the international standard ISO16933, Sapa’s Powerframe system features glass laminated with polyvinyl butyl membrane, which safely retains the glass splinters
caused by a blast. Click here to request literature
Conservatory heaven
Pilkington Cervoglass Activ™ and Pilkington Cervoglass™ Sun are now available with ultra low emissivity coated glass as the inner pane, improving U-value in preparation for the new Part L of the Building Regulations 2010. The changes, which come into force in October will see new dwellings require CO2 reductions of 25
percent.Glass roofs incorporating Pilkington Cervoglass™ Sun provide solar control to help keep conservatories cooler when it’s hot outside and warmer when the weather is cold. Pilkington Cervoglass Activ™ also incorporates Pilkington Activ™ self-cleaning technology, together with solar control, safety and thermal
insulation. Click here to request literature

Meeting Part L
requirements Architects and specifiers looking to comply with the new revisions to Part L of the Building Regulations, which are expected to be published in April this year, will find that the super-insulated versions (.SI) of Schueco's most popular façade systems, FW 50+ and FW 60+ answer their needs precisely. Both .SI systems deliver extremely low Uf values through the use of innovative isolatortechnology that improves insulation in the area between the inner structural profile and the outer
pressure plate and cover cap. Click here to request literature
Popularity of glass reflected in GEZE UK CPD
A RIBA approved CPD training seminar from GEZE UK, is proving a particular hit with today’s chartered architects. The ‘Glass Door Assemblies – Selection and Specification’ seminar, launched in March 2009, now accounts for nearly 50% of GEZE UK’s CPD presentations. The course forms part of RIBA’s CPD core curriculum. Its content not only provides an overview of the properties of glass, its manufacture, and the different types available, but also covers the standards that need to be followed, and how glass can be used in manual and automatic door systems
throughout a building environment. Click here to request literature
All gone gas or Argon gas – which do
you prefer? Regency Glass Ltd are adding a second Lisec gas filling press to their existing line & off-line gas filling for shaped & Krypton gas filled units. As Document L of the building regulations continues to be tightened for both new and existing dwellings, Argon gas filling will become a standard process in sealed unit
manufacture.BS EN 1279 is now mandatory for all sealed unit manufacturers and clearly defines the rules for gas filling compliance. EN1279 part 3: units must be within -5%/+10% of a specified single gas concentration and must have a leakage rate of less than 1% per year, over a 10-year period. It is reasonable to take 90% as a concentration level for Argon because this is the level that all WER windows are calculated at and necessary to attain 1.2W/m2K centre
pane U-Values. Click here to request literature
Energy efficient building gets taped VHB high-strength tapes from 3M, are playing a major part in a window solution at Stevenson Square designed to be the most energy-efficient in Manchester.VHB high-strength tapes had been specified for all of the double-glazed aluminium windows to avoid the presence of external beading to hold the panes in place, creating a cleaner
effect. The £1 million contract was awarded to Keighley-based Aire Valley Architectural who usually supplies windows fitted together with snap-in systems and rubber gaskets, but for this project joined forces with Doncaster-based Senior Architectural Systems to develop a system to bond the glass to the aluminium frames using
3M VHB tapes. Click here to request literature
