20 EDUCATION
The building is steel framed, with concrete floors and a curtain walling system infilled between the steel frame. The main reason for going for a panel system rather than blockwork was because of the early weathertightness it gave the building, allowing fitting out of the interior to begin while the external finishes were still being applied.
In terms of the choice of materials used externally, said Moore, ‘there was a lot of input from the client, the planning department, the FM provider and the insurer in terms of robustness and of whole life costing.’ The north elevation is set hard against the boundary and, said Moore ‘had to be quite robust.’ It is all of masonry, with some banding to break it up.
The southern façade is far more open. In addition to the library, the masonry of the classrooms is offset by cladding in three
shades of grey, patterned deliberately to break up the façade.
Internally, corridor walls are of painted blockwork. ‘We considered various board products,’ said Moore, ‘but they would not be as robust.’ Classrooms, however, are separated by metal stud partitions. This means that, while the edges of the corridors are fixed, there will be flexibility for the future in the sizes of the classes.
Flooring in the corridors is ‘a nice hard- wearing vinyl’. In the classrooms it is generally carpet, but with vinyl for the home economics area and tiles in the design technology area. A skylight runs the length of the circulation spaces and then wraps into a larger area in the central areas. It is set into a standing- seam roof that is coloured green to give an impression of a copper roof – another planning constraint, given that the school is overlooked from some of the surrounding hills.
The long skylight brings natural light into the school
Materials in this building are deliberately tried and tested, but they have been used carefully, both to give the building the required presence, and to fulfil the brief from a client that, delightfully, knows exactly what it wants.
