Landscapes and climate change key in year ahead
The interest in edible landscapes will continue to boom in 2010, along with more focus on green infrastructure as a way of adapting to climate
change. This is the view of leading figures in landscape architecture and design, who are optimistic that 2010 will see a strengthening of the sector.
Land Use Consultants Broadening horizons Overton (UK) Ltd have
recently broadened their horizons by securing an order to supply a total of 25 of their 240- litre capacity litter collectors to the London based company Al- Tauhid Ltd for use in Saudi Arabia. Stuart Rose, on behalf of the company, said “this is a new
venture for our company, although we have exported machines in the past to both the US and Australia, this is the first time we have sold anything to work in the Middle East”.

last year’s Glee, many leading garden and leisure brands have confirmed that they will be returning to Glee 2010 with expanded stand spaces and bigger plans than in previous years.
Many more have also
rebooked after a successful Glee 2009, and even more key names are set to return having missed last year’s show. Key brands such as Gardman,
Bosmere, Handy Distribution, Dutch Imports,
Fallen Fruits, Norfolk Leisure, Rondeau Leisure
and Bonnington Plastics are just some of the suppliers that have all confirmed their attendance at September’s show (20-22 September, NEC Birmingham), with stand expansion ranging from 50sq m to a huge 200sq m of extra space.
principal Dominic Cole said that after a poor 18 months, projects were now starting to pick up again. "I think there are little green shoots," he explained. "Commercially, I know there are a few projects where developers are pushing their clients to make sure that they go ahead this year."
Olympics and renovations raise hopes but pricing remains tough
The Association of
Professional Landscapers vice- chairman Mark Gregory said commercial work such as the Olympics was helping the industry and forecast that renovations of office buildings would throw up business. "There will be a lot of
refurbishment work and that will include landscaping to help encourage new tenants in," he predicted. "New business start- ups are increasing, which is a positive sign."
Kildare Trade Show cancelled
Ireland's Kildare Trade Show, the country's only amenity sector event, will not be held in 2010. It is the first time in nearly a
quarter of a century that the annual show will not take place and is a reflection of the grim state of the Irish economy.
