Playbuilder brings transformation in Solihull


the playgrounds.To date a total of 15 of 16 Playbuilder sites for Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council have been completed by Sutcliffe Play, following design and build tender.


Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Education, Children and Young People, Councillor Ken Messon said: “Being able to play safely and independently is an important part of growing up, and is vital in helping children to stay happy and healthy and allowing them to develop skills that they will use in adulthood.We’ve already improved most of the play areas in the borough and work will continue to maintain the refurbishments and complete the rest of the work. We aim to provide good quality places to play in our local communities.” The following 15 play


areas have already been revamped by Sutcliffe Play to encourage an element of


adventure and risk, utilising both natural and fixed play equipment.


Phase One


* Tudor Grange Park Play Area - features a new sand pit, children’s seating, slides, natural play boulders to clamber over, new skate facilities to replace the old skate park equipment which had been vandalised


* Marston Green Park Play Area - includes new climbing equipment, a large group swing, and play trail


* Colebrook Recreation Ground - including a new area for older children with a seating/meeting area and new equipment for younger children including swings, climbing equipment, see-saw and roundabout


* Dorridge Park Play Area - includes a new basket swing, a 4m high space net, climbing frame, tower climbing boulder and trampolines


* Elmdon Heath Park Play Area - includes a new play trail


leading from the car park, a BMX track, a basket swing, spinning dishes, a climbing frame and trampolines


* Kingshurst Park Play Area - includes a new large curved embankment slide, climbing equipment, large boulders, spinning dish and see-saw


During phase two of the


refurbish, Sutcliffe Play focused heavily on developing natural play areas. Therefore when it came to the choice of equipment they opted for purbeck stones for children to play on, a compass in one play area, a number of climbing stones, walk-through tunnels and pathways plus a dedicated sand pit. Phase three, included new


Sutcliffe Play products in its refurbishment. These combined a number of pieces from the new dynamic range like the sling shot, rock

As part of the national Playbuilder scheme, Solihull Borough Council were allocated £1.1million pounds in 2008 by the Government, which will see improvements to 25 play areas in Solihull over a two year period. Adventurous and risky play is an important part of growing up and is integral to helping children to stay happy and healthy, develop social skills and learn how to safely manage risk. Sutcliffe Play’s brief was to design play areas with equipment that challenges children and encourages them to take risks in a safe environment. Sutcliffe Play was first invited to tender in September 2008 on the design and refurbishment of six existing play areas in the


first phase of the scheme. This was successfully completed on time and in budget, by the end of February 2009. The company was then invited to tender to refurbish an additional three play areas in March 2009. These were completed in June 2009 and a following six were also refurbished between September and December 2009.
