26 ATV’S & UTILITY VEHICLES Train to be safe *Specialist safety training for operators of side by side vehicles is

to be available taking account of the growing popularity of these machines and the wide range of tasks for which they are used. *The European All-Terrain Vehicle Safety Institute (EASI) is a non

profit making organisation, formed in 2002 to implement a European wide programme of all-terrain vehicle (ATV) safety education, training and awareness. EASI is supported by manufacturers Polaris, Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha and Suzuki. EASI’s primary goal is to promote by education, awareness and

training, the safe and responsible use of ATV’s, thereby reducing accidents and injuries that may result from improper ATV operation by the rider. The EASI Rider courses help familiarise purchasers with their vehicle and teach safety techniques, including the importance of PPE. ATV training can be supplemented with additional courses on towing, work on specialist surfaces etc. The courses have been taken by more than 3200 people in the last three years, and user feedback has indicated that even experienced ATV riders found them useful. With an average of 28 courses conducted per month, 34 active RiderCourse Instructors offer training throughout the UK. EASI also supports the dealer network with a set sales handover

procedure, providing all participating quad bike dealers with ‘handover’ packs which include useful safety information for customers as well as details of the course. Future plans include adding modules for side by side vehicles and quadricycles.

Heavy duty launch for Toro Toro introduces two new utility vehicles ranges for 2010. The new

Workman HD Series of heavy duty utility vehicles comprises two- wheel and four-wheel drive diesel options, has a load bed capacity of 1100kg and can tow up to 1,588kg. Replacing its predecessors the Workman 3300 and 4300, key features of the HD Series include the i- beam shaped DeDion rear axle; designed to isolate the engine, transmission and main frame from all load forces, to eliminate potential overstress in these components for a trouble-free long life. An elevating, scissor-lift work platform boasting a 273kg/600lbs lift capacity that can be raised from 0.96m to 2.5m can be specified. Both the two-wheel and four-wheel drive options also feature a 70- degree steering angle for increased manoeuvrability. Another addition to the Workman range is the Workman MD

Series of mid-duty utility vehicles.MD, MDX and electric MDE versions incorporate a new coil-over shock absorber suspension concept to increase operator comfort and safety while reducing fatigue and improve the machine’s productivity and efficiency. Toro has combined each MD Series model’s enhanced suspension

Club Car have launched Guardian/SVC asset management tool.

with the Active In-Frame twister joint, which allows each axle to react independently to the terrain. This means all four wheels can maintain constant contact with the ground for better traction and stability, plus less potential turf damage.

Work Trucks Grillo Agrigarden Ltd is now the UK distribution company for the

Italian Grillo range of work trucks. Models include the PK600, powered by an 18hp twin cylinder engine driving a continuously variable twin speed transmission system with reverse gear. A unique feature of the machine is its ability to switch between two and four- wheel steer with

RECO joins the fray The Kioti Mechron utility vehicle is the first of its kind from the established tractor manufacturer and importer Rustons Engineering Company (RECO) comments that initial demand from UK dealers indicates that it is set to be very popular, prompting the company to double its initial stock order! The machine offers selectable 4WD in conjunction with a limited slip front differential plus the ability to lock the rear differential when ground conditions get tough. The machine has a top speed of 40kph, hydraulic disc brakes all round and 30cm ground clearance.

Specification includes a high-sided tipping cargo box (with 500kg capacity and optional hydraulic tip) and rear receiver hitch with a towing capacity of 590kg.

the option of changing from two to four- wheel drive enabling it to work in awkward or tight situations. An independent suspension system, hydraulic steering and 2 fully

sprung seats boost operator comfort. Tractor or turf pattern tyres are available depending on the application the machine is being used for. The hydraulic tipping body is capable of carrying up to 900kg with all three sides being hinged or detachable for carrying extra bulky loads. Second in the lineup is model PK800. This model has a 25hp three- cylinder diesel engine driving a 10 speed high/ low ratio gearbox. Again the machine can run in either two or four- wheel drive mode with diff- lock on the rear wheels. The front section of the vehicle is mounted on shock absorbers with an anti-vibration system for user comfort. The three way hydraulic tipping body has a load capacity of 1500kg. Hogging the limelight An interesting new addition to the market is the Multihog, a self-

propelled, diesel powered and hydrostatically driven power unit designed for a wide variety of ground care and highway maintenance applications. Father and daughter team Jim and Ruth McAdam have spent 18 months developing the Multihog after recognising a niche in the market for a robust and versatile product that can be used with a raft of attachments, for all season operation. “The Multihog’s tilting driver station, wide wheel base and low centre of gravity enable it to work on steep inclines and rough terrain not accessible by comparable equipment currently on the market,” says Ruth McAdam. “Its range of applications – from grass and hedge cutting, road sweeping, gritting, cleaning as well as snow blowing - is almost infinite, and we are already reacting to customer feedback to add to this list.” The front-mounted quick release mechanism eases changing

attachments and the 90hp engine and a top speed of 40kph offer high outputs.

ATV NEWS Power steering improves the ride A significant development for users of ATVs is the introduction of

power steering, as Yamaha’s Jeff Turner explains: “Power steering reduces fatigue and increases comfort over long days in the saddle when spraying or towing. Our system on the Grizzly ATVs measures torque force as well as speed, which can help keep control if a wheel hits a rut, and maintain a comfortable load at all times.”
