Grounds maintenance company Cropper have been running two

JCB Groundhog 4x4s over the past year. Fitted with Fleet Fastliner systems, the Groundhogs have been put to work line marking over 120 schools in Staffordshire, Derbyshire and Cheshire. Operations Director Shaun Edwards commented “our utility

vehicles are in constant use and we need robust vehicles we can rely on, the JCB Groundhogs are exactly that. Additionally, JCB were incredibly flexible when it came to specifying the utility vehicles to suit our requirements. Both Groundhogs were delivered in our company colours, with a full cab for operator protection and a roll- up driver-side vinyl door for easy access to efficiently operate the line marking system.”

The past few years have seen the rapid growth in popularity of the

Side by Side utility ATV and its cousin the road-legal quadricycle. Increasingly sophisticated and offering greater comfort these workhorses are truly multi-purpose, seating two, four or as many as six people, making them ideal for leisure and sporting activities as well as serious work. While the market dropped significantly in 2009, the Agricultural Engineers Association still estimates that 2600 side by side vehicles were sold into the wholesale trade. Jane Carley reports

John Deere’s Henry Bredin notes that while the company’s Gator

utility vehicles are increasingly used for specialist tasks such as marking out school pitches, a major growth area is as a means of transporting men and kit, replacing pick up trucks. “Utility vehicles are more convenient and economical than pick-ups, and purchasers are increasingly asking for diesel engines and road homologation to take advantage of this. There are health and safety implications of lone working, and having a handy means of transport does get round the problem,” he says. There is still a demand for the Gator in its traditional golf course

Wessex ATV sprayers are carefully built in the UK and incorporate

features such as a very high strength roto-moulded tank, choice of 3 proven quality pumps, and suction and lid filters for maximum pump protection. In addition Wessex sprayer booms are retained within the width of the ATV; whether it’s a 1.5m, 2m, 3m or 5m boom, this unique feature ensures that the traditional issue of boom damage caused by ‘snagging’ on trees and posts is minimised. So Wessex ATV sprayers cost less long-term!

role as many local authorities are responsible for municipal courses, Henry comments, but then the vehicles can also be used for estate and property maintenance, providing a versatile solution at a low purchase price. He notes growing interest in electric powered versions, one municipal customer has ordered the E-Gator for beach cleaning and points out that this may increase in the future.“Local authorities may wish to address noise issues for the benefit of their employees while moving away from fossil fuels, and this could drive sales in the future.” The importance of having a vehicle that can transport people as

Trans utility vehicle is being adopted by users who focus on its flexibility. “There is a real and on-going need for utility vehicles to be used as sturdy workhorses and this comprises a significant area of sales for Kawasaki. The Trans however, takes us and our customers into new territory with its ability to change from a two seat tipping load bed equipped vehicle to a full four seater, which still retains a smaller load bed, in a few swift movements”. “For work gangs and landscaping teams wishing to access sensitive

areas without leaving discernable tracks or a vehicle footprint, the Mule Trans can take four people plus their kit to a work site with ease and then return as a two seater with a 499kg payload or towing up to 545kg including trailer to finish off the job.”
