Landscape Amenity PRODUCT UPDATE

“The Mule Trans undertakes roles such as moving car park staff around out of town retail complexes, security and crowd control duties at open air festivals and even as VIP transport at those same events. It can also be pressed into service to act as part of the refuse collection duties when the fans have all gone home.

distributors of E-Z-GO and Cushman brands agrees: “Utility vehicles have moved on a long way from their golf car heritage and they are now built specifically for the tough jobs that are required of them. As you would expect, they sit much higher than conventional golf cars, have a stronger chassis and come with a heavy duty suspension. “We’ve been building the Cushman Turf-Truckster for over thirty years and this was specifically designed as a workhorse for golf course applications and general maintenance operations. It’s the ideal vehicle for the really tough jobs. We’ve recently upgraded it and it now features a 25hp Kubota three-cylinder diesel engine. This new diesel engine is more environmentally friendly and will provide customers with more torque, more comfortable operation, and reduced noise. In the USA, we’ve sold a fleet of 42 Turf-Trucksters to an oil refinery in Kansas. They are using them as people movers and work vehicles and purchased them because they required a manoeuvrable vehicle with a high payload that can negotiate the tight spaces within the refinery compound.” EP Barrus is also finding demand for the Cub Cadet in more demanding applications. Dealer, Price Farm Supplies, Brecon, has supplied twelve vehicles to Landmarc Support Services who provide a range of comprehensive and unique management and support services to the MoD’s nationwide Defence Training Estate (DTE). Polaris, a brand which is now available from a dedicated UK sales

office via an expanding dealer network, also offers units which can carry three people with a lap belt provided for the centre seat and a Crew version of its most powerful side by side which accommodates a team of six. However, the Ranger series is also designed to be a rugged workhorse.

National Sales Manager Phil Everett comments: “Most utility side-

by-side machines are designed for use on golf courses or similar park land type terrain found on sports grounds, and parks. However, there has been an increase in demand for more heavy duty terrain utility vehicles with extra ground clearance, extra long travel suspension and better traction. These market areas include construction, quarries, large estates, forestry and game keeping. It is here that the Polaris Ranger gains an upper hand as its features are more suited to serious off road conditions.” He suggests that the Ranger will often outperform Land Rover type

vehicles and will go most places that an ATV/Quad will go. “For very, very extreme off road work the Polaris Ranger 6X6 will give almost go anywhere performance with true six-wheel drive. Mountain rescue, all terrain ambulances and fire services are all utilities that have purchased this type of machine. Also, Polaris has sold 6x6 machines into military applications,” he adds.

for Defence training, providing experience in a wide variety of terrains under diverse operational conditions. The twelve machines are operating on the 29,000 acre Sennybridge Training site just north of the Brecon Beacons which is used by the British Army as a live firing range and a SAS training camp. The vehicles are being used to transport personnel around the site and to pick up targets. Every machine was also modified to cope with the tough working conditions they would have to endure on the Brecons with equipment including land anchors, cranes, winches and cabs. market and product specialist Steven Haynes comments: “Customers are looking for the ability to carry increased cargo loads, as well as more passengers. Today, utility vehicles are being used for an increased variety of applications, in a wider range of environments - gone are the days of a UTV being just a machine to haul goods. Implements such as sprayers, and towed donkey engine mowers can be fitted to increase the versatility of machines. The Kioti Mechron can be equipped with optional spool valves to allow hydraulically powered machines such as a top dresser to be used.”

Kubota is seeing increased demand for its rugged RTV in the golf

market, reports UK sales manager Dave Roberts, despite a traditional leaning towards cheaper petrol or electric machines. “Course managers are starting to look at the higher residual values offered by a more robust utility vehicle, and appreciate the benefits of added durability, including less maintenance,” he explains. “While these customers definitely see the vehicles as a means of transport, the stronger build and extra load capacity means that they can do a good job with heavy implements such as sprayers and spreaders. And if you have to move half a tonne of bunker sand, a strong hydraulic tip makes it easy to unload.” He adds, “The strengths of our machines have long been appreciated in tougher applications such as estate management and agriculture, but the golf industry is now beginning to see the advantages too.” At the other end of the scale, there is a requirement for a lighter,

quicker vehicle suitable for transporting two people across rough terrain, suggests Yamaha’s Jeff Turner. “Lone working can have health and safety drawbacks, so in the amenity and utility industries, we have found our petrol engined Rhino popular as it matches the agility of an ATV with the ability to carry a driver and passenger,” he explains. Arctic Cat is another manufacturer offering a UTV in this

category in the shape of the Prowler, powered by a 695cc four stroke engine. Independent suspension and 31cm ground clearance improves rough terrain ability

News & Products Electrifying launch for Polaris

utility vehicle aimed at the golf, hospitality and entertainment industries. Using a 48v AC motor to generate 30hp, this model has a top speed of 40kph and a range of 50 miles.
