My Favorite Gear: tiM o’Donnell
J
ust 10 months after retiring as a Lieutenant from the Navy and moving to Boulder to train full-time,
Tim O’Donnell tasted some serious success: a win at the 2009 ITU Long Course World Championships
in Perth, Australia. “Listening to the National Anthem while watching the American flag being hoisted
high was a powerful feeling I’ll never forget,” says O’Donnell, a native of Shaverton, Pa. A fan of non-
drafting races, thanks in part to his strength on the cycling leg, the 29-year-old plans to focus on the 70.3
distance in 2010. Then, with London 2012 on his radar, he’ll embrace drafting and the accompanying skills
and speed Olympic courses take. Although his only contact with the water from here on out will likely be
in a wetsuit and goggles, O’Donnell, a six-time National Armed Forces Champion, will, as he says, “always
race for the Blue and Gold.” Here, some of the gear that helps him emphasize the gold part:
Mavic ZxelliuM roaD cyclinG ShoeS ($299; mavic.com)
“I like to train in a pair of road cycling shoes in winter because they keep my feet warmer than mostly mesh tri
shoes do. But I match my road shoe to my tri shoe so I don’t have any alignment or performance issues. I use
Mavic’s Tri Heliums for my race day shoe, which use the same carbon platform as the Zxelliums do.”

riding the St Croix course this winter, so
fast. It’s nice to get used to them early in the season.”
I can defend my title there in May.”
