Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC)
in 1990, where it has made its mark.
Since its move to full Division I status,
Siena Athletics has continued to grow. In
2002, the program added women’s water
polo, giving it 11 women’s programs and
seven on the men’s side. Athletic success has
improved thanks to a continued commit-
ment from the College to enhance athletic
aid, full-time coaching and facilities.
The Program
Four teams won conference championships
in 2008-2009, with volleyball, men’s basketball and men’s lacrosse
before bowing to eventual National Champion Syracuse at the

soccer programs enjoyed
great success in 2008. The
women posted the fifth-most-
improved record in the country with a school-
record 13 wins following a program-best start to the
season (7-0-2). Under the direction of first-year head
coach, Gareth Elliott, the men’s soccer program made
great strides, posting a 7-2-0 league record and earning
the #2 seed in the four-team conference championships.
The Siena women’s basketball team has captured seven
regular-season MAAC titles under the direction of head
coach, Gina Castelli. In 2000-2001, the team earned its
first MAAC Tournament championship and initial NCAA
berth, traveling to Nashville to play Colorado. The Saints
played in the postseason WNIT in 1999, 2002 and 2003.
