Floor General
Energetic. Efficient. Eager. All are qualities you want at the helm of a team, and
Jasmine Thomas personifies all of them. As a sophomore, Jasmine has taken control of the
Duke offense and it couldn’t be in better hands. Exuding the fire of a competitor, Thomas also
executes the Duke offense with a cool and calm demeanor, the distinctive yet rare combina-
tion essential to an effective point guard.
Thomas came to Duke as a highly touted guard, known for her
scoring ability. While her ability to put points on the board remains
a steady asset to her game, her playmaking ability and game control
have been the motor that has kept the Duke machine going this
season. Always a proponent of the assist, Thomas reflects on her
development, “I’m trying to focus on making myself better for
my teammates; I need to focus in trying to set up other people.
I’m just working on what I have to do to make the team bet-
ter.”
One word described Thomas as the season began; solid.
After establishing herself as a floor leader in early season
practices, Thomas led the Blue Devils to a season opening
victory against then #14 ranked Oklahoma State. Gaining
confidence and experience as the season progressed, expec-
tations were high for the sophomore. A knee injury suffered
in practice kept Thomas out for three weeks, including three
games.
What would have been seen as a set back for many proved
to be an opportunity for Thomas to bounce back stronger than
ever. Without the opportunity to be on the floor during the injury,
the young floor general intently observed practices and games
from the sideline, gaining a greater perspective of the Duke system.
When she returned from the injury, Thomas immediately raised the
bar at practice with her aggressive play and competitive spirit, setting
the tone for this energetic Duke team.
Currently averaging 3.4 assists per game and better than a 2:1 assist-
to-turnover ratio, the point guard now looks to lead her team into ACC
conference play. Every great team has a heart beat, and Duke has found a
strong and steady one in Jasmine Thomas.
