ESPN’s NBA Crew On the Call for Duke/Davidson
ESPN flip-flopped its TV crews for its hoops games on January 7th. Its NBA announcing crew of Jeff Van
Gundy, Mark Jackson and Mike Tirico visited Cameron while Dick Vitale and Dan Shulman headed to
Miami for the Heat’s game against the Denver Nuggets. ESPN executive Norby Williamson noted that it’s
“a natural progression to make connections between college and the NBA. We try to cultivate basketball
fans.” See page 47 for an interview with Coach Van Gundy.
Paulus Named Candidate for Lowe’s Senior Class Award
Greg Paulus was named one of 30 finalists for the 2008-09 Lowe’s Senior Class Award. The award is given
annually to the Division I Student-Athlete based on “the four C’s” of classroom, character, community, and
competition. The award was actually inspired by Shane Battier’s senior season in 2000-01.
K Center Honored
The Krzyzewski Center received the Design-Build
Institute of America (DBIA) Southeast Region Award
as the best project in a private sector over $15 mil-
lion in 2008. The $15.2 million facility has provided
our program with the finest resources in the nation
since it opened in February.
Duke Reaches No. 2
The Blue Devils climbed to No. 2 in the January
5th polls. During the Coach K era, Duke has been
ranked in the Top 5 in 50 percent of its games!
J-Will on the Call
Duke jersey retiree Jason Williams has been busy
this season calling games and working the studio for ESPN’s college basketball coverage. Williams was
sitting courtside calling NC State’s home game against Marquettte on December 22nd when Golden Ea-
gles star Dominic James hit the game-winner shot with one second left. After hitting the three-pointer that
gave Marquette the 68-65 win, James immediately ran down court pointing at Jason. When asked about it
after the game, James said he wanted to acknowledge his idol growing up... Nice praise for Jason from one
of the best guards in the country!
