Impact Power Technologies: Pushing the Portable Power Envelope

IPT President Curt Quinter received the 2013 Radio Club of America’s (RCA) Fred M. Link Award for Technological Ad- vancement, one of the highest tributes bestowed by the RCA. This award is given once a year to persons who have contrib- uted substantially to the advancement and development of land-mobile radio communications. Quinter was instrumental in pioneering the fi rst Lithium Polymer Battery for Land Mobile Radios, which has and will continue to change all two-way communications for the better. This new technology was originally inspired by a shootout incident in San Antonio where an offi cer’s battery failed after only four hours and he was un- able to call for back-up. It was then that Quinter took it upon himself to engineer a solution.

Unlike other Lithium Polymer that has since en- tered the market, Quinter developed an exclusive for- mulation of Polymer cells whose quality is unrivaled, and whose operational safety circuitry is sound. IPT’s Battery Management System (BMS), unique chemistry and optimized

electronics deliver a guaranteed runtime of 20 to 35 hours (de- pending on the model) and 900 charging cycles—three to four times more than OEM batteries—plus there’s no memory ef- fect for faster charging, and IPT promises a two-year lifespan. IPT’s quality control requires each battery be tested at every phase of production so that it’s guaranteed to be free of de- fects. In addition, Quinter designed IPT’s batteries to be over 50 percent lighter than OEM batteries. Working 12-hour shifts, police offi cers typically have to bring three or four batteries with them to get their radios through an entire shift. What this all means to the wireless in- dustry is that IPT’s Lithium Polymer batteries keep personnel safe by providing reliable, full-shift communications. More- over, agencies save money upfront with competitive replace- ment costs, and overtime with a lower lifetime investment. “Police radios are the police lifeline,” Quinter stated. IPT already led the longev- ity race with their original 8610 battery for the XTS 3000/5000 Radio, which had 4000 milli- amps capacity and delivered 27+ hours of runtime—three to four times more than OEM bat- teries. Now IPT has ramped up the milliamps to 4700, thereby increasing the power more than 30 percent, making it the highest capacity battery in the industry. IPT believes the proof is in the testing.
