ertain plant-based foods rich in natural compounds called


methyl adaptogens may help slow biological aging, according to a study published in Aging. Epigenetic aging measures how old a person’s cells appear biologically, based on chemical tags called DNA methylation patterns that influence how genes function. Researchers


analyzed the diets of healthy men ages 50 to 72 and found that those who consumed more methyl adaptogen foods — including green tea, oolong tea, berries, rosemary, turmeric, and garlic — were biologically younger than their chronological age, suggesting these foods may have a direct impact on slowing the aging process.

While chronological age reflects how many years you’ve lived, biological age measures how your body is aging based on genetics, lifestyle, and environmental factors. Researchers at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine studied people younger than 50 undergoing colonoscopies to see if biological age played a role in colorectal cancer risk. Using DNA analysis of blood samples, they compared biological age with colonoscopy results and found that each year of accelerated aging was linked to a 16% higher risk of developing precancerous polyps.


ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTANTS LINKED TO FASTER AGING Stanford University researchers analyzed the blood and urine of adults for 64 different chemicals, including pesticides and industrial pollutants, to see how exposure affected biological aging at the DNA level. They found that people with higher levels of cadmium (from cigarette smoke), cotinine (a byproduct of tobacco exposure), and lead (from old paint and contaminated water) showed accelerated DNA aging, suggesting that environmental toxins may speed up the body’s aging process.

Johns Hopkins researchers modified the DASH diet to be lower in carbohydrates and higher in unsaturated fats and tested it against a standard diet. Participants eating the DASH diet had blood sugar levels that were, on average, 11 mg/dL lower and levels stayed in the optimal blood glucose range for an extra 75 minutes a day.
