Carla Babb: I Have Best Assignment in Journalism

W

New national security correspondent has told stories of America’s military from every corner of globe. BY MARISA HERMAN

hether it is a top- secret train ride with the Secretary of War into Ukraine or embedding

with an Army team conducting a coun- ter-poaching mission in Gabon, Carla Babb has told stories of America’s mili- tary from every corner of the globe. For the past 11 years, the award-

winning reporter has covered what she calls the best assignment in jour- nalism — the Pentagon. After spending 16 years reporting

for Voice of America, Babb is bringing her storytelling to Newsmax, where she will continue highlighting the lives and missions of U.S. service members as a national security correspondent. “I am completely biased,” she

admits. “I do feel that covering the Pentagon is by far the most dynamic beat there is.” With tensions rising between

China and Taiwan, the “ever-present” threat of Iran, and the ongoing war in Ukraine, there is no shortage of global events to cover. “There is always something hap-

pening with the military,” she said. “They are always front and center, and how they react is very important to our country and global security.” For Babb, covering

the Pentagon means not only telling human stories, but also hold- ing leaders account- able — no matter who’s in charge. With 15 cents of every federal dollar

funding the department, she said it is important to ensure taxpayer dollars are being spent properly. Babb’s arrival at Newsmax came

on the heels of the Pentagon’s new rules that govern how reporters inter- act with department officials, includ- ing a ban on reporting on classified information. The press restrictions have

been widely criticized as a threat to press freedom and government trans- parency.

ment opposing the policy that requires media outlets to sign an agreement to adhere to specific guidelines before gaining access to Pentagon officials and information. Newsmax called the new require- ments “unnecessary and onerous.”

“Newsmax has long

advocated for its First Amendment rights, which include a free press and free speech,” the company said.

Newsmax Rolls Out Plan Tied to Bitcoin, Trump Coin

N

ewsmax’s board of directors has authorized a plan to buy up to 5

million Bitcoin and Oficial Trump Coin over the next 12 months, subject to market conditions. Newsmax expects to join more than 100 public companies that hold Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies on their balance sheets. According to BitcoinTreasuries data, public company-held coin represents over 4.7% of total Bitcoin in circulation. Newsmax also

plans to add an oficial Trump Coin to its strategic crypto reserve. The popular meme coin was launched earlier this year by President Donald Trump, and the circulating coin value exceeds $1.2 billion today with a total coin market value of around $6 billion, according to figures from Coinbase. “Bitcoin is fast becoming the gold

standard of cryptocurrency, and we believe it would be an important company marker to add this asset to our company reserves,” Newsmax CEO Christopher Ruddy said. “We are also excited to add an oficial Trump Coin to our cryptocurrency plan, as we believe the coin’s value should track the success of the Trump presidency, which so far has been impressive,” Ruddy continued. After making such a purchase,

Newsmax expects to be the first NYSE company to purchase the Oficial Trump Coin. Newsmax anticipates making

the first tranche of cryptocurrency purchases soon. Additional cryptocurrency acquisitions will be evaluated based on market conditions, operational requirements, and strategic objectives.
