Over five hundred years before the crucifixion of Jesus, the angel Gabriel was sent to the prophet Daniel with a message from God. This was a message of such importance that God did not give it to Daniel in a dream or a vision, lest Daniel should misinterpret what God spoke. It was a message that told of a redeemer to come, and gave a mathematical formula which foretold the exact year the redeemer would come in ministry. This redeemer would be called “The Messiah, the Prince.” Gabriel began by telling six things the Messiah would do; He would . Finish 1 the transgression. Make an end of sins. Make

1. The Apostle Paul said the Law of Moses was “…added (to Israel) because of transgressions, till the seed (Christ) should come to whom the promise was made.” Galatians 3:19. Because of their transgressions, Israel was ruled over by the Law of Moses until the day Christ abolished it on the cross. Ephesians 2:15.

2. John the Baptist introduced Jesus as “The Lamb of God, which takes away the sin of the world.” John 1:29. The sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross is the method God used to wash sin from our hearts, and thereby, “make an end of sins” in those who trust in Christ.

3. The Apostle Paul revealed that “God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto Himself.” II Corinthians 5:19. Reconciliation for iniquity was fulfilled in Christ through His death on the cross.

4. “Everlasting righteousness” is never mentioned in the New Testament, but “everlasting life” is spoken of fifteen times. The two are inseparable. Everlasting life is the life of God given to those who trust in Jesus Christ. Everyone has everlasting existence, but only those who are “born of God” have everlasting life. The angel Gabriel spoke of the resurrection of the dead to the prophet Daniel; “And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.” Daniel 12:2.

Amazingly, it was demon spirits who were the first to recognize Jesus as “God's Anointed.” The Bible says, “And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.” Mark 1:23-24.

The promise which the angel Gabriel gave was of one called “The Messiah, the Prince,” later referred to as “The Christ.” When Jesus asked Peter, “Whom do you say that I am?” Peter answered, “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God” Matthew 16:16. Martha, the sister of Lazarus, gave an even more powerful confession of who Jesus is. After her brother died, Jesus told Martha, “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?” John 11:25-26. Martha's answer was the faith that raised Lazarus from the dead. She said, “Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world” John 11:27. She knew and understood who Jesus is, as though she was saying, “You are the one who will make an end of sin; you are the one who will reconcile us to our God; you are the one who will bring in everlasting righteousness. You are The Messiah, the Prince, whom Gabriel promised would come!”

6. The last of the six promises, “to anoint the most holy,” was the first to be fulfilled. The Bible says, “And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” Matthew 3:16-17.
