he eyes of the world were on presi- dent Donald J. Trump in August as he stepped off Air Force One in Alaska to launch a daring bid for peace in Ukraine, meeting with Russian President Vladi- mir Putin at Elmendorf Air Force Base. Putin was familiar with the loca- tion, of course. Elmendorf, after all, is
the base from which America’s stealthy F-22s scramble to intercept Russia’s nuclear-capable bombers and escort them out of Alaska’s Air Defense Identification Zone. Trump’s tough rhetoric and high-stakes ma-
neuvers to attain the summit had stunned the diplomatic world. For a while, there was hope the meeting
would persuade Putin to allow peace and rea- son to prevail. It was the first time the United States had host-
ed a meeting between the U.S. and Russian presi- dents since 2007, when then-President George W.
Bush had welcomed Putin to Maine. Trump rolled out the red carpet for his Russian counterpart and quickly got down to business. He reportedly offered to drop all economic sanctions against Moscow in return for a ceasefire. Putin’s cold-blooded response to that at-
tempt to end his ill-fated military assault that had claimed a staggering 1.5 million casualties since 2022? Nyet. His counteroffer: Ukrainian President Volody-
myr Zelenskyy would cede Russian ownership of the entire eastern region of his nation. Trump knew that was a complete nonstarter.
After all, Ukraine measured every kilometer of ground by the river of blood her military heroes had to spill to defend it. So rather than waste more time trying to
help the Russian leader find an exit ramp for his reckless military blunder, the president shrugged, flew back to Washington, and sharp- ly raised the stakes.
