Central Coast Getaway

Adventure, relaxation — and views to die for. BY BECCA BLOND F

or a peaceful getaway on California’s Central Coast, few places are more capti- vating than Monterey,

Carmel-by-the-Sea, and Big Sur. Whether it’s savoring ocean views

and whale watching, discovering local cuisine, playing golf, or enjoying breathtaking coastal views on scenic drives, this region offers a mix of relaxation and adventure.

Where to Stay

• Fresh off a rebranding and renovation, the Monterey Beach Hotel is the city’s only beachfront resort and my favorite place to stay in this region. It puts you in the heart of it all, and is just steps from the Pacific Ocean. It is classy but affordable,

and the ocean-view rooms are

worth paying more for. They face the crashing surf on this long, golden stretch of coastline where the ocean is less than 100 feet from the hotel, and falling asleep to the sounds of the sea is always magical. I saw multiple humpbacks

and gray whales passing by, often breaching very close to the

shoreline. In the evenings, head outside to more comfy couches facing the sea with firepits. The sunsets here are gorgeous and go on for close to an hour. Guests get a daily $25 wine

credit included in the resort fee, which gives you about three complimentary glasses that can be poured from the “wine wall”

featuring local winery selections. Other amenities in the room

rates include two hours per day of electric bike rentals and access to a heated swimming pool, barrel saunas, and cold plunges. The Lantern Room is the onsite restaurant. It serves California fare for breakfast and dinner.
