PROCESSED FOODS KEY TO RISING OBESITY RATES An Australian study published in the journal Obesity has confirmed that highly processed and refined foods are the main contributor to rising obesity rates in the Western world, mostly because people overeat fats and carbohydrates to try to obtain the protein their bodies crave. Researchers found that people who consumed lower amounts of protein in their first meal of the day went on to increase their overall food intake in subsequent meals. But those who ate the recommended amount of protein ate less throughout the day. “The problem is that the food in Western diets has increasingly less protein,” said David Raubenheimer, Ph.D., of the University of Sydney. “So, you have to consume more of it to reach your protein target, which eff ectively elevates your daily energy intake.” The study authors believe that excess weight gain is driven by the body’s “protein hunger,” and its lack in highly processed and refined foods is driving overconsumption and obesity in the Western world.
ULTRA-PROCESSED FOODS LINKED TO PREMATURE DEATHS A study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found that increased consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) was linked to more than 10% of all-cause, premature, preventable deaths. The study was conducted in Brazil, even though Brazilians consume far less of these foods than countries with higher incomes. The study found that 10.5% of all premature deaths —
and 21.8% of all deaths from preventable noncommunicable diseases in adults aged 30 to 69 — could be attributed to the consumption of UPFs. Examples of UPFs are frozen pizza, ready-to-eat meals, hot dogs, sodas, and store-bought cookies, cakes, and doughnuts.
THIRDHAND SMOKE TRIGGERS SKIN CONDITIONS The residual pollutants from tobacco smoke that remain on surfaces and in dust are referred to as thirdhand smoke, or THS. Researchers at the University of California, Riverside, have found that when skin is exposed to THS it develops markers associated with the beginning of skin diseases, such as psoriasis and contact dermatitis. “We found exposure of human skin to THS initiates the mechanisms of inflammatory skin disease, and elevates urinary biomarkers of oxidative harm, which could lead to other diseases, such as cancer, heart disease, and atherosclerosis,” said Shane Sakamaki-Ching, Ph.D. “These biomarkers remained high after the exposure stopped. Alarmingly, acute dermal exposure to THS mimics the harmful eff ects of cigarette smoking.”
WEIGHT-LOSS SURGERY REDUCES URINARY INCONTINENCE Urinary incontinence is a common problem among adults who are severely obese, but most adults who undergo the two most common types of weight-loss surgery can expect improvements, according to a study published in JAMA Network Open. Of the 1,227 study participants, 52% of women and 25% of men

Breast disease included cysts and fibroadenomas, and the increased risk lasted for at least two decades. “If a woman is diagnosed with a benign breast disease, and she has other high-risk factors, such as a family history of breast cancer, she could benefit from more frequent screening,” said researcher Marta Román, Ph.D.
