’m walking through the hoh Rainforest mesmerized. I’ve never seen so many


diff erent shades of green. And


not just hues, but diff erent textures associated with them: mosses clinging to trees, tendrils trailing down, electric green grasses, the deeper emeralds of the Sitka spruce and western hemlock trees, which can reach more than 300 feet in height and 7 feet in width. On the western side of Olympic


National Park and one of its most treasured attractions, the Hoh is one

of the largest temperate rainforests in America, averaging some 14 feet of rainfall each year. If you want to indulge in an


unforgettable outdoor adventure this summer, consider this national park and the surrounding Olympic Peninsula for a weeklong adventure. You can fl y into Seattle, rent a car,


and then follow our leisurely loop around the Olympic Peninsula and through the park before returning to the Emerald City. This region is best visited in


late spring through the fall, when temperatures are pleasant and there


are more sunny days than usual.


SEATTLE TO PORT TOWNSEND Leave Seattle and head southwest via Interstate 5 for 45 minutes to the small town of Gig Harbor, which has a walkable waterfront lined with shops and restaurants that off er fantastic views of Mount Rainier on clear days. Another 40 minutes past Gig
