dirt particles on the Shroud. “And they crucifi ed him. Dividing
up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get. “It was nine in the morning when
they crucifi ed him. The written notice of the charge against him read: THE KING OF THE JEWS.” (Mark 15: 24-26)
“At noon, darkness came over the
whole land until three in the afternoon. And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, ‘Eloi, Eloi, lema sa- bachthani?’” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”). (Mark 15:33-34)
“Therefore, because it was the Prepa-
ration Day, that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be bro- ken, and that they might be taken away. Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the fi rst and of the other who was crucifi ed with Him. But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and wa- ter came out. And he who has seen has testifi ed, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may believe. For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfi lled, ‘Not one of His bones shall be broken.’ And again another Scripture says, ‘They shall look on Him whom they pierced.’” (John 19:31-37)
According to the biblical account,
Jesus was lanced in his side and heart pierced. The wound on the left shows both
blood and water, with the lance pene- trating just above the sixth rib. The fl ow of both blood and water is consistent with a wound to the heart. Frederick T. Zugibe, a former chief
medical examiner and Shroud research- er, wrote in The Crucifi xion of Jesus: A

Forensic Inquiry that the image’s side wound is consistent with a spear pen- etration. The wound is reported to be three inches, consistent with the width of a Roman spearhead. The thrust of spear collapsed the lung
and ruptured the right chambers of the heart. From there, fl uid collection around the lung would build up and cause a clear liquid to release from the penetrated area. The cloth shows an eff usion of blood and water.
Also the blood fl ow from the hands
and feet identifi able by the Shroud stains further indicate consistency with the nail punctures described in John 20:24–27. While history has long depicted Jesus
nailed to the cross through his palms, the Shroud show such nails piercing the man’s wrists. Once again, archaeology confi rms
that Romans did, in fact, strike the nails through the victim’s wrists, allowing for greater stability as the victim hung from the cross. The insights recorded by Niyr and
Zugibe paint a picture of a thoroughly emptied fi gure who died just as the New Testament said he did, one facetiously adorned with a crown of thorns and beat- en without regard. The blood on the Shroud also backs up the claims of a most hideous death. The blood of the rare AB type has also
been found to have high levels of both creatinine and ferritin, nanoparticles found in victims who have suff ered vio- lent deaths. Dried blood is typically dark and black
and not bright red, as it appears on the Shroud. During torture, however, a per- son’s liver secretes bilirubin (red bile) into the veins. When mixed with blood, bilirubin produces a bright red color. The Shroud’s blood was also found to have high amounts of bilirubin.
A JEWISH MAN IS BURIED
Forensic fi ndings from the Shroud show that the crucifi ed man who died was given a traditional Jewish burial. “Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked
