THE MAN IN THE MIDDLE Speaker McCarthy Holds Together
a Fractious GOP and Congress
MCCARTHY MUST SHOW LEADERSHIP The job of speaker of the U.S. House is one of the toughest in politics — particularly now, when you have a small GOP majority and a fractious membership (“Kevin McCarthy: Man in the Middle,” March). But the nation cannot aff ord for Kevin McCarthy to be timid. He needs to show decisive leadership in the remaining months before the 2024 election, laying out Republican policy priorities to the nation that will help put an end to the Democrats’ misrule and send Joe Biden into a long overdue retirement. And those Republicans who fought his election to the speakership in January should think long and hard about the cost of frustrating McCarthy’s leadership. They will be responsible if Republicans fail again in 2024.

What’s Kevin McCarthy’s survival plan when he fi nds himself in the crosshairs between RINOs, the old Republican guard, and those who want the Republican Party to turn over a new leaf? He should stick to core GOP principles of limited government, low taxes, and respect for family and life. wendell framserwort Boise, Idaho
DO YOUR JOB Congressional representatives were elected to do one thing and one thing only: represent the nation and its citizens (“House Rebellion May Haunt GOP in 2024,” February). If they don’t want to do that job, resign. We’re better off without you.

“We The People” need to decide if we run the country or if the government runs the country. We are “the People.” It’s not that hard.

EARLY GREATS Truly great men, like George Washington, Thomas Jeff erson, Abraham Lincoln, and even Thomas Paine, may be icons of the past, but unless we once again learn how to reintroduce their wisdom into our national fabric, we will be doomed to repeat the same old mistakes dealing with the issues that are vexing this

CLEAR MESSAGE Sending illegal immigrants north helps share the problems burdening border states. Once illegals arrive on your doorstep, however far away you are from the border, it changes the conversation. Both Govs. Greg Abbott (Texas) and Ron DeSantis (Florida) are right to have shone the spotlight on illegal immigration to show the magnitude of this horrifi c issue. (“Border Crisis Solution Staring Us in the Face,” February)
sammi harrison Cedar Creek, Texas
Of the millions of illegal immigrants who have crossed our borders and were bused across America, how many are working? How many are we still paying for their housing, food, medical expenses, clothing, and more? How many have found work as well as a place to live and are not depending on government handouts?

TOXIC TRAINS The railroad industry has not upgraded its infrastructure. Ever-increasing tonnage has degraded tracks. Freight trains have become too long. They should not be carrying toxic chemicals
through populated areas like East Palestine, Ohio, the scene of February’s toxic derailment. Train lengths should be shortened so they can exit a community faster. Increased federal oversight of the system is a must. (“We Need Results-Driven Leadership, Not Gridlock,” February)

CORE VALUES What happened to the GOP’s traditional values of low taxes and small government? We don’t need Washington meddling in our lives and spending our hard-earned money. If we did, we would vote Democrat. jeffrey wilson Tampa, Fla.
BIG TECH THREAT Two articles in your February Issue, “Congressman Ken Buck Takes on Big Tech” and “Main Street Goes Woke,” say it all about both big business and Big Tech. Both do more damage than any rabble-rouser, tyrant, or war could infl ict upon us. Big Tech thinks it can ultimately control what we read, see, and hear. Woke corporations and other businesses fall right in line, carrying the torch for Google, Facebook, and pre- Musk Twitter. The next thing you know, we no longer have a country of people who can actually think for themselves, but a nation which parrots buzzwords and phrases like those found at Disney Continued on page 8
