major in journalism in the fi rst place was because he was a “good writer” and preferred writing a paper to tak- ing a test. When working for local news affi li-

ates, he said the traffi c and accident reports were handed over to him, and many local stories required very little writing. Now, he gets to construct a mono-

logue before every show. “I didn’t get to utilize my writing

craft until I got to Newsmax,” Schmitt said.

To prepare, he is an early riser —

even though his show is at night. He wakes up at 6 a.m. and begins

scrolling through social media plat- form X to fi nd out what people are talking about. Schmitt then spends the morning

reading, fi nding, and following sto- ries.

He squeezes in a workout before

arriving at the offi ce at 1 p.m. to start preparing for the show and writing his monologue.

Even though Schmitt is a seasoned

anchor, he said appearing on TV is still “nerve-wracking.” “It’s intimidating,” he said. Schmitt called the “pressure of live television” something that he still feels every night just before he goes on air. Schmitt said his most memorable

on-air experience involved a long journey to Kyiv, where he interviewed Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelen- skyy in his presidential palace after Russia invaded the country. To get there, Schmitt fl ew to

Poland, and then took an 11-hour train ride with no internet access.

Once he arrived, he

said the presidential palace was completely blacked out and only lit by fl ashlights in order to protect Zelenskyy. Schmitt said that if

given the opportunity to interview anyone in the world, he would choose entrepreneur Elon Musk.

He would love to “dig into” the

head of the billionaire who “blew so much cash trying to save this coun- try” from the path of censorship and authoritarianism that was creeping into social media, particularly the app formerly known as Twitter. “His politics are so interesting,”

Schmitt said of Musk. “He deserves far more respect than he gets.” When Schmitt is off air, he enjoys

traveling, golfi ng, and playing tennis. He likes to spend winters warming up in the Florida sun. His latest project is fi xing up a 1969

Land Cruiser.
