Divided Democrats Take Control of the House
Political strategist Doug Schoen warns the party must curb the hard left or face a stinging defeat in 2020.
T
he 116th congress will be a divided one, and not just along party lines. After flipping an impres-
sive 40 seats in the House of Repre- sentatives, the new Democratic major- ity faces an ideological split within its own party. There are many new liberal faces
coming to Capitol Hill, and there will be deep rifts among pragmatists, including the party’s leadership, and its increasingly loud leftists. Despite 32 votes against Nancy
Pelosi in the Democratic Caucus, it is almost certain she will be re-elected speaker.

with moderates and try to compro- mise with the president or, despite her reassuring post-midterms rhetoric, side with the Progressives and pro- mote conflict? Pelosi was very subtle as she posi-
tioned herself to reclaim the gavel. She was, through a series of backroom deals, able to quell the growing move- ment against her, without necessarily fully extinguishing it. The vocalness of her opposition
remains palpable among Democratic leaders nationwide. Just like in 2010 when members of the Tea Party, who were largely
responsible for Republicans taking control of the House and loathed what Speaker John Boehner repre- sented, this New Left despises the establishment centrism of Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., who have been firmly against some of the more absurd calls to impeach President Donald Trump, and eliminate Immi- gration and Customs Enforcement. In addition to calls for impeach-
ment of the president and abolishing ICE, the Progressives generally, and Democratic-Socialists specifically, have also promoted Medicare-for-all and a Federal guarantee of jobs for all. While these policies would be a step
too far for many Americans in the political center, they are ascendant in the Democratic Party’s ideology and positioning. The clock is now ticking on the
